    ek 58X0 backplate problem

I have the 58X0 backplate and an EK 5850 block, and I'm pretty sure I installed it right. But as you can see, the backplate is actually warping a bit. The real problem is the back plate is resting on a small piece of metal, and I'm afraid it will short out the card. I've already sent an email to EK about this, but I want some comments from you guys.

what brand is your 5850 ?
looks like the hole on the backplate does not line up with the block !

the brand is diamond. I thought it was reference, the block itself fits.

    Hi!

I have double checked this now and found this is my mistake.
I wanted to make an universal backplate and those chips crossed my way now.
I was so carefull and I see I still made the mistake. And tested the backplate only on 5870 card :S

That hole is any way not supposed to be used with 5850.
I suggest you to dremel off (remove in any way that standoff that is touching the chips and all will be ok.

I really apologize for this. Hope this solution will be acceptable for you.

Oh well - here we see both Swiftech and EK have their problems exposed, and getting feedback and help - and giving help. It is good to see such customer awareness from these two companies.

Thanks for your response. I did what said before you said it.
Works fine now. Again, thanks for acknowledging the problem.

    + 1 EK

I think there must be a "7" instead the "X" on the backplate now.

I've already wondered if there are 2 coolers für 5850 and 5870 but only one backplate.

I am having this problem too. unfortunately I did not see that it touched a capacitor before I turned it on. It shorted a capacitor and there was an acrid smell, luckily the card still works. I am not impressed! No instructions supplied with the backplate either did not help. If the card fails because of this I will be quite annoyed with you EK!

mine was with the nickel plated one btw

    Hi!
I totally understand you. I am not happy ether...
Regarding instructions; you must be one of the first few backplates that was sold without manuals. They are uploaded with the product in web shop:

I dont have a dremel or any means with which to remove the extra bit
could'nt you just make some new 5850 ones (which I'm sure you are doing anyway) and send me a replacement? Or even mod this one for me I'm happy to send this one back if you like

Hi, I am sure someone near you has some kind of grind or file or even a metal saw? Where are you from? Please send me PM or e-mail to EK.

Hi, Eddy! Will you produce the two various backplates for 5850 and 5870? I`m going to order a 58X0 backplate for my 5870 card but if you are going to produce the new revision of it with 5870 logo instead of 58X0 let me know.

We will just modify these backplates so they will fit to 5850. As basically only half of the standoff is on the way. So we'll just mill off about 45% of that standoff and backplates will be universal as they should be.

Sadly mine shorted on a HIS 5870 and i believe it is reference. I already sent the card back for RMA and will double check with the backplate again when it arrives. I had the card and waterblock since it was available and had no problems till i decided to install the backplate. All i did was remove old screws and stock backplate and put the ek one on and used the new allen screws.

Please send e-mail to info@ek... as we would like to check what was the cause of your cards failure. Did you recognize the problem? Anything to see on the card?
