Recommend a 1.5TB USB disk

I'm going to replace my LaCie 500GB (2x250GB maxtors in it) as it's been in use 24/7 for like 5 years and it's starting to have some minor issues like when I sometimes start it up I it doesn't find all the files (folder structure is ok but files missing and sometimes report it as "RAW" format disk as well) and have to restart it until it does work normally.

What's some good ones today, that runs cool and is reliable (I even mounted a 120mm fan on this LaCie USB hdd to avoid overheating so I would gladly not have to continue do that), those are the most important factors. Ofc the bigger plattersize the better.

had a 500gb western digital (green series drive) and a 750gb seagate (samsung drive) external usb disk drives both broke in less than a year with light use.. rma then brake again in less than 6 months.. so i just pulled the harddisk from the enclosure and installed internaly and they work fine.. stupid usb drives..

You could get a nice aluminum USB HD enclosure and slap your own HD of choice in it. You can often come out cheaper buying components as well. I have a nice full aluminum Nextar (forget the model right now) enclosure that I use for my 1.5TB drive filled with HD movies. The full aluminum design allows for very good heat transfer.

Well perhaps I'd skip USB and just go for another internal drive, seems like WD's Green series would be my best pick for data storage drive but the 32mb cache version is like out of stock everywhere and the new one with 64mb has some advanced format BS I've rather not deal with everytime I boot into XP. What's taking WD or Samsung so long to release some normal 1.5TB drives (F3 or Blue series).

samsungs drives are the best and the f2 is great for external use. for an enclosure i use the rosewill thats on newegg but i dont know were u would find one

Agreed Samsung is the best in my opinion.

Even Samsung F2 1.5TB is like out of stock all over the place in Finland, what's up this sudden lack of HDDs? At least it's cheap tho, just below 100 EUR and seems to be getting better feedback overall than WD Greens.

But meh at this LaCie BigDisk 500GB, seems like the power supply has now crapped out, I searched the net and share all the symptons of the very common power supply failure issue LaCie has and can't get the drive working now so can't backup/move my files on it. Luckily my bro bought the same drive (we only bought em cuz of a very good special offer) so should be able to borrow his power supply if he comes around sometimes next month. Quite funny though, power supply craps out before the HDDs, I mean it's 2x250GB 5 year old Maxtor DiamondMax 9 in it in RAID0 FFS but I belong to the minority that's been having no problems at all with Maxtor HDDs so I'm 90% sure it's the power supply. Even got a 160GB Maxtor from 2002 working perfectly fine until today.

I am happy with my Samsung hd's and my 1.5TB Seagates. If you are going to use just over USB you could consider the greener slower spinning eco models that are available.

Whatever you get, check the number of platters. Some older 1.5TB disks have 20,000 platters inside them. More platters = less reliability. Something you sort of care about in an external.

Well the reason I first concidered USB is cuz if I take it with me I can't garantuee that the target PC whatever that will be a PC I'll have to fix or simply just share some media files with etc will have eSata support why I usually keep at least one USB hdd but yea lately I haven't moved around this old LaCie USB hdd anyway and doubt the new one would be carried around to different PCs as USB flash drives carry so much capacity today.

Ofc I note the amount platters and I think Samsung F2 EcoGreen 1.5TB will be my best choice as it's 3x500 and 5400rpm so should be good for storage and for WD's Green series they seem to be phasing out the older and slower model with 32MB cache which I'd be more interested in. The availability sux atm tho for all 500GB platter 1.5TB HDDs.

Hehe it was idd the power supply to the LaCie USB disk that was broken. Borrowed my bro's power supply for the disk now and copying over stuff to my new 1.5TB Samsung F2 I bought as a replacement. Quite funny that the like 5 year old 2x250GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9 in RAID0 still works fine but the power supply died, I think that tells quite a lot about the quality of the power supplies LaCie (lazy :p) provide the their disks. I mean cmon Maxtor DiamondMax 9 in RAID0 has been a good recipé for disaster for many users but it lasted longer even.

Most E-SATA drives also contain a USB connection option for compatibility. USB3.0 drives start showing as well. A new 1.5TB drive operating via USB2.0 is considerably transfer-rate bottlenecked. Your old 2x250 didn't have this much of a problem.
