    If you own or have had a dead Asus Z7S WS post here.

    This thread is for folks that bought the Asus Z7S WS dual socket 771 board and had it mysteriously die while rebooting.
    What I'm trying to do with Asus is to solve the issue here.
    No pointing fingers of guilt, just solve the problem.
    Now at this point Asus has NOT agreed to anything.
    We've spoken, I've suggested that to replace the Z7S WS's with a new dual socket 1366 Asus board would be a reasonable way to bring this issue to an end and it's been kicked upstairs at Asus.
    If your agreeable to that and have had this issue with your Z7S WS board then please post and then PM me with all your mailing info.
    Please keep this civil.
    A short post of your experience leading to the death of the board and your usage of it will suffice.

    Actually, that is pretty much the truth, but it just happened to die while you were visiting. Nothing you did. Bad timing. Ran fine for about 7 or 8 weeks, up til then, with a set of x5460's.

    This thread doesn't count for fat-fingering a certain SM board, right? ....

    Yeah, didn't think so....But that rig is still crunching it's azz off as a single socket board....Farm-12. It rocks. Thx for making it happen.

    You saved me from the whole hassle of the Z7S problem....I'm glad I listened.

    Thanks for making an effort to help crunchers make rigs right. Dave, you rock.

    I've had 2 dead Z7S WS boards...

    Both were replaced by Asus , which is good service from them.

    But I've had my share of crap , check sig.

    I had this discussion with dave
    What I understood was the bios update was killing the boards.

    Has anyone tried to reflash the bios to the older one?

    Well thats what I also got told by Dave.

    He said to make the new stepping to work, the BIOS flash was needed.

    Now I had a Similar problem once with an Abit IC7 MAX. Which one I updated the BIOS and rebooted with the new chip it failed to post.

    I plugged in a PCI Debugger and looked at the codes and it was FF,
    I am sure this means that POST has been sucessfull and all the checks have passed.

    So I did the following things.

    Unplugged the RAM
    Powered on then powered down

    Turned mains off and took out cmos battery
    Powered on then powered down

    Next I took the cpu out, and powered on and powered down and switched off at the mains

    Put it all back together it worked.


    Maybe someone should try this ?

    It took Asus several months to release a bios that supported the E0 cpu's.

    Problem is the boards die after a restart or when the board's running. (possibly blown power circuitry , I don't know). It's not a particular bios which kills the boards as far as I know.

    jcool had a dead board recently , and he was using stock voltages iirc .

    If the circuits had blown, or a trace would have burnt out, its visible damage you can see it.

    I checked my last board for traces of burn damage, nothing. However, there was one where one of the Ram PWMs blew up (visibly). That was my first one, and it also went straight to FF.

    As far as removing ram, CPUs, etc goes, I have tried all that multiple times with multiple boards. Never was I able to resurrect one of my dead boards.

    Naw, sorry. But I know a burnt phase when I see one (seen enough )

    I too am not sure what causes them to die. My last one died in operation (without a reboot or anything) while I was away... it was still running but only drawing ~100W of power from the UPS and not reacting, when I restarted it never came back.

    I didnt say you didnt know what a PWM was...
    But more like which one was burnt...

    Maybe all of them a dieing.... with the same one buring out.
