This shot is not about quality, it's about the fact of capturing a Great Blue Heron with 100mm fl(not easy to do in the wild)! It doesn't look that bad for a 100% crop. I like it at full size, because you get to see their cool eyes..awesome birds!

i'm not sure how to do this the right way or easiest way since i'm still new to photoshop. copy background layer, erase red color with a circular brush, convert to b&w, that's it

easiest way.... and frankly the best way as far as i am concerned.

This must be done on the original sized photo.
if i resize it, then try to use the history brush it wont allow it.
you might be able to resize it, then save it, then do the following steps, i just do not recall every trying.

make the photo black and white --> Image-->Adjustments-->Black & White or just hit (Alt+Shift+ctrl+B)
choose the history brush from your tools panel on the left.
erase the black and white spots you want to be color.

the history brush of course un does anything you have done to an image
this can also be done with blurring.
just blur the entire image then use the history brush to erase the blur to bring back the sharp spots you want to keep sharp.

    quick and dirty example

    original

    black and white w/ color

    Loonym...You are missed.

    The element of one

    Breathe me in
    Breathe me in

I disbelieve in separation. I close my eyes to see you.
This is for you, everything I am. This is for you, take it from me.
I, I disbelieve separation. I close my eyes
    there's no escaping me
This is for you, everything I am. This is for you, take it from me.
In your heart in your soul. I perceive rejuvenation

I was hoping to hit a few abandoned houses yesterday but my buddy had to bail out on the last moment so no shooting all week. Maybe this weekend.
Also waiting for my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 to come back from calibration and my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 to come in from the U.S.
Now I just need the 24-105L.

I got Really lucky with a small series of shots, I never took pictures of wildlife like this before. I was in Maine vacationing with my family and we were at the lighthouse where they shot Forest Gump. This guy kept flying circles around us around our height (ramp to lighthouse is off ground quite a bit), I noticed it kept dropping this clam trying to break it open. So I pulled out my camera set it to Ai Servo and burst and just went snapping away.
