    HD5970 + LN2 = Unofficial 3DMark Vantage Single-Card WR

Today I had around 5-6 hours to dispose of 20L of LN2 and some HD 5xxx cards. I realised that I would only have time to bench with 1 or two of them, so I had to put the HD 5850 and the HD 5870 aside and focus on the HD 5970. The vmods for this cards are not a secret, but I want to publish all of them in my HD5xxx overclocking article for the first time, so that is why this time they are blured.

Obviously, for today I chose to put the 2 HD5970's under LN2, so I smacked the pots on them and started working. Unfortunately after a few hours I was convinced that something went worng with one of the cards, because I was getting all sorts of artifacts when the system was loading Windows, and Vantage was impposible to run even at stock clocks.

Obviously, after I took the second HD 5970 off the platform the weird behaviour went on, and the system was freezing in one out of 5-6 boot-ups. It took me a while to realise that the problem was the temperature, not the cards. I was working at -70 oC, and this cards could only workproperly up to -20 oC. After this was discovered, everything went much better.

After I have found the proper working temp, I started to look for the optimum vGPU and for the max GPU clocks. For now, with the stock VRM's, the best results are done with 1.35-1.38 vGPU.

The maximum GPU clock I could reach today was 1100MHz, and that is something I have to work on in future sessions. After I got this settled, I took the W3580 up to 5100MHz and started to bench.

Obviously, all the testing I have done up to this point ate most of my LN2, so I had to bench with only a few liters of LN2. Well, with those last liters a WR popped up

Unfortunately, you all know how my luck is, so the validation file for ORB is corrupt. Therefor, th WR is "unofficial"

I tried to squeeze all the LN2 that wasleft in the dewar, but I could not finish another run, in order to get a valid WR, if possible over 30k. That will have to wait for the next session.

Hehehe... have to wear that because I open the window to get as cold in the room as possible, so I have to wear some "bench"clothes :P

For thsi one I benched solo, matose was at the theater with his girlfriend and Micutzu was sleeping because he is flying to some Intel conference tomorrow. It's fun to do it alone though

Regarding DDR rating, slap hm yourself

The PSU was Cooler Master UCP 1100W.

Your asking if I come to Romania, well, I might do that in 2010... Tomorrow I will call a university in Budapest asking if I can apply for engineering study... Anyhow, if that becomes a reality, I sure intend to pass by sooner or later

And yeah, its GOOD to keep the warm, I was benching DICE in a 5C room! Trouff was sitting next to an open door in Canadian weather

I think your PSU might be too small for maxing out that system??? Especially if cranking it up to 1.8-1.9v

EDIT;: reread, nono, rating is mhz*2.... Writing 2200mhz etc. is penalty

Nice work on the volt mods - I like the idea of soldering the molex plugs on for easy temp/voltage reading.

    lol @ the last 2 photo's also

Marc - no need for 1.8anywhere bro, CPU is just fine at 1.63v and vGPU at 1.4v max.

Hondacity - Thank you, I will try to smash 30k after I get more LN2, it would be a pity to stop here.

EmineM & sofos1990 - I hope to get that HD 5xxx OC guide up as soon as possible, but I have another 2 articles I have to publish before that, this year

eva2000 - yeah, that was quite lucky for my girlfirend to catch so perfectly in the photo my change of feelings. I was like "ARGHHHHHHHH, I'll pour LN2 all over the platform just to get another score"....."Wait, no more fkin LN2!!!!!". P6T6 WS Revolution rocks

chinobino - thank you, but I think the ideea with the molex for measuring points is quite old.

G80 - hope to go even beyond that, 75MHz over what I got on air is not a good eficiency on LN2 if you ask me

I tried, but I couldn't get the voltages working right, then I ran out of time... Good to see you scoring a nice result though, congrats!

Thank you guys, I will definately give it at least another try.

And on a funny note, a fellow from our forums pointed out something very interesting - corruption is so high in my country it even got on my platform and corrupted my ORB file =)) =)) =))
