Exclamation Intel plans 600GB SSDs for end of 2010

    Source: http://www.fudzilla.com/
Intel has shared with its partners that it wants to launch a next generation SSD drives in Q4 2010. It calls it Postville Refresh and they will be manufactured in a process smaller than 34nm.

If all goes well Intel should launch a new series of X-25 M drives in sizes up to a respectable 600GB. These drives should replace 34nm Postville drives that are currently shipping and are available in sizes up to 160GB.

The Postville Refresh will bring many drives in sizes from 80GB for the cheapest all the way to 600GB for the fastest and biggest. It will be manufactured in 2xnm process and we suspect that this might be 28nm, if not even smaller, but we need to dig a bit deeper into this to find the right answer.

Intel didn’t share any performance details about these drives, but we can imagine that they will end up quite fast.
Are there any other 34nm drives planned for release any time soon? Intel seems way ahead!

A 600gb intel SSD should only cost about $1600 to $1700. What a bargain!

Hope that some of the smaller SDDs will get cheaper through this

    what the hell?
Capacity is the only thing keeping it down and I suspect it will always have half the capacity of mechanical drives . If you think capacity is all right then SSD is not for you.

of course that's how it works but it's a waste of time to wait for it and I disagree that Intel is ahead of the pack, they just have more hype but more specialized companies offer more exciting and cheaper SSD's. Intel now has only 160GB while everyone else has 256GB

It's not so much about the capacity but about faster and cheaper NAND!
These drives should replace 34nm Postville drives that are currently shipping and are available in sizes up to 160GB.
Great news for everyone, X25-M G3!

Doesn't matter what it is as long as it's faster than standard discs, has enough capacity for normal use and is cheap enough in the price/performance charts.

I think most people are looking forward to the higher capacities as it will lower the prices of the smaller ones and thus make them viable for normal everyday use without the need for a mortgage.

Intel has yet to get off their butts and ship the 320GB G2 drives that would be a virtual walk in the park to release. They're stalling...and I can't see this stance as changing.

Maybe the end of 2011, but 2010....unlikely.

    I need 60 - 80 gigs for a laptop drive. 80gb for $100 would be ideal.

I hope G3 will come with another round of price cuts, so 600gb will retail for around $1000

    Dude... lolwut?
You are so wrong on so many fronts.
1.) SSD is not about capacity but about speed.
2.) There are high capacity SSDs available, but unaffordable for 99.9% of people
3.) bitmicro had a 1.8TB SSD when the biggest HDDs were just 1 or 1.5TB
4.) If you have a problem with capacity and can't value it's real forte, the
speed, then IMO SSD is not for you.

    On topic:
Hopefully the 80GB version will be affordable (sub-$100, prettyplease?), and
not gimped in speed, unlike the current G2 40GB version.

Please improve the write speeds. It's really the only significant weakness

They said 600GB is gonna be the fastest... Aside from obvious sata 3, hopefully the smaller models also get a performance boost worth upgrading, and not just a lower price per GB.
Meaning I hope they won't make them as those new Seagates whose 50GB model offers 40MB/s writes and 200GB one offers 160MB/s in writes.

    Capacities are pathetic.

If you have a filesystem that REQUIRES SSD speeds then you're not using win 95 for your os files only

You're a gamer with 20-30 games that take more than 10gb each
    or
You're a HEAVY media user, studio production with terabytes of uncompressed videos
    or
you have server requirements to house massive sites

Capacities are the single biggest weakness of SSD's
