lovin the midwest snow storms... NOT!!
sorry for the crappy picture, i just stepped out the back door with some slippers on to get this picture and i didnt want to stand out there and let the glass on my lens get wet from the blowing snow.

i think we got 11 inches over the last 24 hours.
i spent nearly 2 hours this morning with a snow blower and a shovel clearing the drive way, went back and did it again earlier this afternoon, twice yesterday. and i have to shovel off the back steps every couple of hours (where this picture was taken) as the wind whips around there and creates huge drifts.

    Great shot spaz...really clear.

    Another sunset.

I have no idea why it seems hazy. It was friggen cold and shooting in ~30mph side-gusts....lens hood was acting like a sail.

Long time ago took some good photos of a mid-day partial solar eclipse. With half chrome filters, thru the clouds. Developer (one of those drive thru photo kiosks) said they lost my negatives. 10 years later I find a postcard for sale with my friggin' eclipse on it!

    new toy came today.
    Yashinon DS-M 50mm F/1.7 M42 - use M42 screw mount to EOS adapter
wicked lens, and once again, a $45 very well spent!
very tiny lens too, alot smaller than the canon 50mm f/1.8
better quality than the canon too, image quality i mean.
    much better color reproduction also.

(this picture was taken using, believe it or not, an Atan 28-70mm lens on my Canon 40D.
Pentax P-MC mount (pentax k mount). using a pentax K to EOS adapter.)

the pixelation like stuff you see around the letters is not jpeg noise or anything, its actually like that on the lens.

Cool Lestat. So, using the M42 adapter...you lose AF? I'm under the impression that mix/match lens usually lose AF. You can put a Nikkor lens on an EOS, but it's MF...correct?

yup you can absolutely use a Nikkor on a canon using the nikon F to EOS adapter, it is 100% manual
i actually use one already on a Quantarray zoom, and i have a HOYA HMC WIDE-AUTO 28MM 1:2.8 AI LENS coming too. - $13 off ebay!!

there are no M42 autofocus lenses so this is 100% manual focus and f-stop. i also have a HELIOS 44-2 2/58 coming, those are the bad boys, those lenses as long as you get a good one are killer.

everyone talks about using stop down mode and i frankly dont know why you would need to, there are a few instances of bright light that might need stopped down a bit just by their nature, i do it with my normal lenses as the 40D and XSi are far too bright at EV +/- 0 i usually run -2 clicks. (that is 1 click away from EV -1)

i also forgot to mention that this has less zoom to it than the canon 50mm.
if i look thru the view finder, then pop my head up, the item i am looking at looks almost the exact same size in the viewfinder as it does in life. more of a true 1:1 ratio.
*i did some checking after posting this, and the above statement is only true and certain distances, close up it is zoomed a bit, further away it is smaller in the viewfinder

it makes you realize just how much crop/zoom the canon lenses have when you dont use them on a full frame sensor.
i would love to see what this lens would do on a FF sensor.

only bad thing is that you almost have to use live view and manual focus.
reason being is that dSLR do not use a split or cat's eye prism on the mirror for focusing thus its almost impossible to tell if you are focused unless you are really close.
switch over and use live view, use the LCD zoom function, and get dead on focus every time.
what i do is quickly use live view to focus then pop back out of live view and snap the shot. the live view light metering is different and causes pictures to be too dark. you almost have to step UP to make it look the same as non live view exposure.

the last lens i am after is a Jupiter-9 85mm,,, just gotta sell some stuff or get lucky and snipe one off ebay.

Get the Canon EF-S focusing screen. I have one on my 50D and it makes manual focusing so easy.

yeah but tearing apart your camera to get that thing installed is not something i like, it makes me nervous.
heck bro i would send it to you and let you do it before i would risk damaging my camera.
i was actually looking at one of the Kat's Eye units.

If you can put a CF card safely into your camera, then you can do this.

    1. Remove the lens
    2. Pull the latch at the top to open the cover
    3. Take the stock focusing screen out
    4. Put the new focusing screen in
    5. Close the cover
    6. Put the lens back on

That's a nice piece of glass you got there Lestat, lately you have been getting some great lenses. Cant wait for the pictures.

I think as Marin suggested, getting a focusing screen does help a lot when doing manual focus.

yeah i am thinking about it, its just that anytime i think about "removing" or "altering" something, all i can think about is my warranty and how if something went wrong canon would probably pull a "your warranty is void because you altered your camera".
and i just cant afford that.

but if i am going to go back to manual on many lenses then i might have to ....
