18-55mm IS. Although I also used the 17-40L f/4 that day as well but for some reason it was not sharp. Probably needed micro adjusting on my body.

The 18-55mm IS is supposed to be the sharpest kit-lens around besides the L glass.
The 17-40L was most likely also softer cause of the UV filter on it. It wasn't one of the named brand ones.

I got the 17-40L and it's very sharp for my use. It was just not fast enough for me at that range.

Maybe you will have to calibrate it.

Yep definitely needed to be fine tuned for the body that's all. I had no time to do it on location as it wasn't mine to begin with.

Yeah. I was gonna buy a new lens this month but happened to get 2 tickets for running trough a red light both a few days apart so I'm not gonna piss the wife off and will hold off till next month or so. But it looks like it may be after Christmas the way the shopping bills are racking up.
    I'm wanting the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or the Canon 35mm f/2.

Anyway the 18-55mm IS is probably the best non L kit-lens out there. The thing is so sharp that when I shoot portrait, I have to intentionally soften the image.
The only thing it has going against it is it's size and small aperture.
It looks puny on the 7D.

I find this rather weird, but what do I know, this is the only lens I have and have ever tried with my Canon. And I am not satisfied with it, irrational?

What other lenses with about the same zoom have you compared with?

    I've tried the Canon 10-22 and 17-40L.
I've also tried the Tamron 90mm and Canon 70-200L f/4.
Also tried 2x 50mm f/1.8 and have to say I'm not sure why the Canon guys rave about it for. My Minolta 50mm f/1.7 and f/1.4 focussed much faster and were much sharper wide open.
If I get the 50mm, it would probably be a Sigma.

On my Sony the kit-lens was not the best. BUt when I bought the 7D body only, I consciously bought the 18-55mm IS because I had used it previously on my cousins XSi and was pretty impressed by how sharp it was.
So it wasn't like I didn't know what I was getting to begin with.
Also the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 is around $500-ish here in Canada and the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 is over 1k.

I'm planning on an all prime lineup with one fast zoom which will most likely be the 24-105L but it all depends if I can swing it.

Not sure how the 18-135mm 7D kit-lens is though.

i think the 50mm 1/8 is sharpper than the 18-55mm stock from the rebel line up, but im the worst to contradict you elisha, yes the 50mm is slow to focus but for 90$ i wont complain maybe the usm version is a lot better in that aspect.

I'm sure the USM will be loads better. I'm just used to having a better 50mm prime than the current Canon f/1.8 that's all.
Another buddy that moved from Sony to Canon had a similar complaint about the Tamron 17-50mm.
He mentioned that it was such a sweet lens on his Sony that he bought it for his Canon once he switched and it was garbage in comparison since Tamron did not have a USM equivalent.
He hated the slow focus and the noise it made during AF. On the Sony it snapped into focus with the screw drive instantly.
But the Canon users love the Tammy 17-50mm and that shows they do not know how much better that lens is on a different system altogether.

So I suppose if you have a comparison across different systems, you would know where I'm coming from.
Not gonna give up the 7D anytime soon :-) She gives me sweet dreams every night!

just a heads up.. its nice... damn nice, but be sure you can use it.. i borrowed one from a coworker,, used it for about an hour.... gave it back..
without question it is a beautiful lens... just didn't need a macro as i thought i would. my coworker somewhat regrets getting it too as he thought he would love having a macro... and rarely uses it.
