its suppose to have a 294W TDP, so if its using alot less than that, then they have alot more room for real TPD

ATI Radeon HD 5970 Overclocking Problems
Today we had planned to show you how the Radeon HD 5970 performs when overclocked. However the more we began to play with the Radeon HD 5970 the less likely that article seemed possible and instead we began to head in another direction, which lead us to this article “ATI Radeon HD 5970 Overclocking Problems”......

can anyone explain why a card so powerful only comes with 1gb of usable memory ? and its to be used with very high resolutions so I guess it should even have more memory for that ?

I'd hope to play gta4 with maxed out settings for example, and that requires more than 1gb...

future games won't use more than that or what ?

Have all the other preview sites failed to notice this alarming down-clock issue?

some of us here already got their hands on a 5970. Could you verify that at stock speed please?

All 5 series cards can have this problem as unlike the 4 series ( which could could burn out under furmark ) they have a mechanism in place to protect the gpu / vregs from being overstrained.

However as mentioned, quite simply the load furmark can apply is beyond that of any game and AMD simply didn't design these boards/cooling solutions to handle these types of sustained loads. I personally wish they could, but as far as the reference design goes, our hands are tied. Higher performance cooling solutions will certainly help but ideally we will need to see a 5970 with a custom PCB and waterblock to really see them shine ( and not burst into flames and sound like a 737 taxiing in process ) Myself, I won't consider a 5970 running on air.

(the review) What a noob.. he expect a good overclock with that stock cooler? I guess AMD should also have said "You need proper cooling..." as to tell what enthusiast must already know... And wtf about Furmark, everyone knows it puts GPU's in a unrealistic load, it is clocking down as a measure to not fry the card (dumbass) how about he take proper time for a review than throw this at us and tell readers see it as a bad overclocker. In the furmark SS you can see the card clock to 550Mhz as to reach a approx 100celcius, give it a waterblock or something and i really doubt there's gonna be any downclocking.

(who wants to be it was near or over 400W)

Not horrible IMO. Sure, using FurMark is unrealistic but the majority of HD 5970 cards ARE very poor overclockers at their stock voltage and above.

    theres a difference between getting 20MHz at 1v and 100Mhz at 1.15v

and what they are saying which these cards are only stable at 550MHz (trying to point out that they dont believe these cards can even run at 650MHz)

Quite the contrary I'm afraid. If hwbot is any indication then we can say most 5870 cards w/ stcok vcore get 950/1250, or an 11.8% and 4% overclock respectively. While that might not be spectacular, it is far from a poor OC with stock voltages IMHO.
