Man people need to see AMD is doing wrong here. They increased the price by 100 dollars and they lowered performance on the clocks by 17% and memory clocks by 20%. Alot of people expected 5870 clocks at a 499 price point. Some were even expecting the 5970 to be clocked higher than the 5870.

If this was an NV thread, people would be up in arms about this. But instead since its AMD, people are already salivating.
I agree I'm disappointed its not even in the same ballpark as the 8800 ultra $829 msrp. Sounds like you have a case of selective memory ? Hardware is all the same, they had to slow it down a bit cuz a thing called PCI-e compliance.

So in other words if an enthusiast like ourselves was disappointed in these clocks just simply overclock it in the Catalyst control panel.

Oh so 5790=5850x2. What are they going to call the real 5790?

No, its a dual downclocked 5870s on a stick. Everything else physically is the same with respect to shaders, etc.

Are you going to go with an $80 CPU to go along with your $600 graphics card? Why stop with a cheap case, go cheap with everything else, even the power supply.

i think most people understood 499 was on the low side for this card and probably wouldnt happen at launch..

i mean really almost double the 5870 for only 100 bucks more?...and in the slides they are giving away the fact that you can hit upwards of 1ghz core speed and the stock cooler can handle a 400watt load..while stock is a lil less then 300..thats a good amount of head room..and like others stated they simply downclocked the core/mem to make it under 300w tdp..this card should double the performance of a 5870 for $600...i think thats worth it..

You more or less just proved my point. I already have made it a point people complain about people complain about high priced NV, people make complaints all the time. Its not a case of selective memory because I already made a point that NV gets slamed for their cards being priced high.

This is a case were AMD does the same thing, and there is no complaints. The price was promised to be under 500 dollars and people were expecting a 5870 specs in a 5970. This is not that at all.

AMD lower the specs and raised the priced. If it was any other company, people would be putting thumbs down or this. But AMD can get away with anything these days because they are the underdog.

No my point is if this was Nvidia this would be way more lol around $700 and up. At least I opened your eyes on the downclock explanation. Nobody is really complaining btw because you have to logically compare it to the MSRP price of 2 5870s. The price is right for this. Mission accomplished.

WTF, where, did AMD/ATi state that it would be $499...
It was always going to be at least $549/$599, people WANTED/HOPED for a $499 5970 but that was never going to happen.

yeah this thing is going to be a massive overclocker. Monstru already had his at 1000/1300. They just have it cut down to 725/1000 so they could undervolt and get 294 tdp and so that the cards stay alive longer in newbie cases once they're covered in dust and less effective at cooling. BTW the ASUS Mars has a tdp of like 360 watts, and it has PCI-e cert.

Just a small correction, 1000/1200, with 1.262v for the GPU and 1.15v for the GDDR, stock cooler, normal air

I thought it would be closer to $499 since the other models fall close to their placement on that chart

Just what I was looking for. Glad to hear the card does well on air.
The little air system that could.

i agree. For now 5870 is 400$. Only a stupid guy, is gonna sell 2 5870 gpu & 2x memory a bit downclocked for only 99$ more.

599$ is a good price. No offer from nvidia, they are king in the lastest single gpu and dual gpu, and the only one offer with dx11. Why lower the price when you have the best products, and your need money for your huge debt.

Be realistic guys. AMD sell the best product, and need money for pay R&D. That's fair.

the flaw is that chart is based on good tsmc yields and competition. both of which brought up cards prices. if prices fell 20% after a few weeks, like we had hopped/expected, then 500$ for a 5970 is right on, and 400$ for a 5850x2 is also spot on.

    OOPS! :o

So is the GDDR voltage controllable via software? This is getting exciting!

The cheapest way would to go caseless or hack up a case you already have.
