Looks like we have to put pressure on the administrating team to change things.

Won't work, the way things are handled here is to turtle and ignore it until it goes away.

btw, I'll probably get a slap on the wrist or ban for this post.

I think that's what gets under my skin the most too... "site supporter" was just initiated this past year. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/payments.php

I dont understand the need for the new aggressive ad campaign.

it's easily enough rectified for everyone, even the public without a xs user or site supporter can browse ad free as a guest with ad block or noscript. but still, the no announcement to members and no instructions on what site supporters need to do to block the ads, is a pretty big screw up in my book.

My site support annual payment takes me through til Feb 2010, at which point I probably will not donate again. and I usually donate to all the sites I visit daily. I consider it like a magazine subscription once a yr, but after the way this ad campaign was handled, I dont think I'll donate next yr.

hold your horses. the last time the ads went down the hill like that it took some time as well, but fugger responded and pulled the ads later on.

i agree with everyone about the ads here, but don't trounce fugger & co yet. i'm pretty sure this thread didn't go unnoticed and he'll take care of our complaints, because i also think these scam ads aren't in fugger's interest either.

This reminds of that Simpsons episode where Homer ran the Nuclear Power Plant through the computer and he left the diving bird ornament hitting the tab key,
    Atleast the bird tried.

Yeah, ABP + FireFox = no ads, so this isn't such a huge issue for those offended by the ads, who have an easy solution.

The bigger problem is that yet another rewrite of the board coding to add in the ads has reintroduced an old problem - the whole page is one huge table again meaning the table cell widths must line up. So now any post that has a wide picture in skews ALL the posts on the page, meaning the page has to be horizontally scrolled to read EVERY member post on that page.

This needs to be reverted ASAP - each member post needs to be its own table independent of all the others, so that they fit the window width and can be read without scrolling, and only the wide photo posts then need horizontal scrolling. Horizontal scrolling for EVERY post is simply unacceptable.

The ones with sound pissed me off tonight while playing some music over my speakers at increased volume.
I've had the same thing happen to me. I've also been sitting here in a dead silent room with my headphones on listening to some quiet music. The ad's go off and it's like "CONGRATULATIONS YOU'VE WON A N IPOD" at 9000 Volume and I scream and wake the entire house up. I can't help it.

I live in the US and use Firefox with adblock plus and it does not block out this horrible . As soon as I come to this site a voice comes on telling me that I won a 1,000 Walmart gift card and then 5 minutes later a voice tells me that I was selected for a special gift. As a paying member of this community I would like to see this sleazy and desperate attempt to generate funds stop immediately.

and never see another annoying ad generated delay or ad again.

adjuggler is the offender of all the annoying ads. netfirm is the ad at the bottom of the forum , and is not bad at all.

Ummm... what? No script just disables js. As long as you visit decent sites you don't need it, in fact having it will only cause problems. ABP solves the ad issue for this site and others very well. Just make sure you add the right subscriptions. You can also manually block ads or add that section to the subscription. I am subscribed to Easylist and I never saw any ads. I manually disabled them once I heard about them since they were content relevant and not annoying, but these are kind of ridiculous.

The creator of NS is also kind of a . He purposefully "updates" (no actual changes) NS frequently so that you view the NS homepage and he makes ad revenue. He also used to make NS disable ABP on his site until the ABP creators discovered it and he got into a lot of hot water.

there's no use to make ABP and NS competitors, rivals etc... both are brilliant extensions, period. Other considerations, yeah

ps:and both can be used to block ads (keyword with ABP is ABP Element Hiding Helper, a cool add-on...to this add-on ).

I have no issues at all with running ads, but the sound ones kill me too. I had a really embarrassing incident with that the other day at a big client's office in a cube. "Hey, you've won an iPod!" or something. I was able to laugh it off, but it was awkward.

As a forum owner myself for over ten years, I know it's a lot to keep after. I say more power to Fugger if he can get a bit of payback for providing such a great community home base. If ads can help him out in any way I say go for it. My only peep of a request would be to limit it to no sound ads.

    Good luck!

my instructions work, trust me... you surgically kill the scripts for adjuggler and it kills the entire process. no more annoying audio ads or ads in the upper right of the page.

you may have a solution, but dont knock noscript and tell people it doesn't work, you dont know what you're talking about. it does...

    +1

I'm using ABP and No Script and I haven't seen a single ad. I didn't even know they were there until I saw this thread.

Worked for me. Thanks. That being said I do think that the ads should be looked into.
