I'm advocating people use adblockers and/or web filtering. I use both. I use AdBlock because I'm not always on my home network and because it helps with my battery life....and I use web filtering so that I never see the crap when I'm at my apartment, regardless of the computer I'm on.
Web filtering at the DNS server will prevent ads from being shown on any browser on any OS (I don't even see ads on my iPhone when on my apartment's wifi). I originally used OpenDNS because Comcast's DNS server sucks and cuts out too often, but turns out it's great at web filtering (if you setup a profile, it's free and they don't bug you). If you do go this route, make sure to check the "Adware" and "Phishing" checkboxes on the filtering settings page
It's really great not seeing these ads--I know I'd be pissed asif I had to see/hear them.
