    AMD Phenom II X4 965 - Revision C2 vs C3 comparison

    Hy guys,

I just finished a head-to-head comparison of the new Deneb C3 revision against the old one (C2). I compared overall system power draw, max. CPu frequency, max. memory frequency, max. NB frequency and efficiency at a fixed frequency in SuperPI 8M.

The new revision looks quite good: less power and more overclocking headroom .

You can check it here (Romanian language | Google Translate may be necessary)

    best regards,

What OS was used for the tests and overclocks? 32 or 64 bit?
Pretty decent idle power draw I must say.

Thanks! Can you show a photo about the C3 CPU?

Were these tests done with C1E enabled? Also, can you confirm that the Northbridge now has multiple P-states and clocks down at idle too?

Overall, C3 looks like a good chip. I may ditch this Phenom II 940 in a couple of months for one.

How many processors were tested? Without a huge sample size, there is no way to know if "C3" indeed overclocks better or even has that much better power consumption. We all know that both of those factors can change from chip to chip even within the same revision. ESPECIALLY when the power consumption figure is well within the margin of error (2W).

Great! So we should wait for a PII X4 975. I just hope it will have a higher clocked NB/L3.

i'd like to see both chips overclocked at the same voltage. the C3 overclocked to 4.2 uses less power than C2 at 4...

If you red the article, it says MAX OC. With other words, the C3 will do 4.2 even with higher (reasonable) voltage. Maybe it's the ODMCS limitation or MB...

Thank you for the comparison sir!

It's good to see PHII continuing to improve, even if slowly.

    Thx guys!

    The C3 doesn't scale beyond 1.55v, so I couldn't get higher with 1.575v or 1.6v.
SKYMTL, the difference is 2W in IDLE... in LOAD is about 15W which is nice.
Yes, I used C1E and Cool&Quiet activated and from what I saw the NB doesn't slow down.
I will put pics with the CPU later today !

Looking at hes graphs I'd say no, atleast not now. Idle should be much lower.

I still believe that the NB has multiple P-States but I suppose that hes BIOS doesn't support such features yet?

Nice preview, keep the results rolling!

Yes, you are maybe right but 2002 was the latest official ASUS BIOS. I don't care so much about IDLE power, overclocking is all that matters . Can't wait to put it under LN2....

can u test, please, stability with max AIR OC? I think, 1h prime or LinX at 14-16 000 with 15 rounds is OK.
And Cinebench (4100 MHz+2800 at NB, it will cool)

You may call it "exclusive" since there's an NDA on the C3 stepping 965's.

I read about this over at AMDZone. You are right, the BIOSes do not yet support rev C3 power features! We'll see a lot less power usage when we get C3 capable BIOSes . Cheers!
