lightman is that dabs?
in just $ per frame, the upper 5700s and low 5800s gotta be better than the upper 5800s, but who knows what kind of price drops we will see in the next few months. after the dx11 introductory shock value is over, and after the new nvidia cards come out. prices can be all over the place between now and january. so im just gonna sit back and wait patiently
There is a difference between the games you mention and Q3: in most if not all of the games there is "luck": you can spray and get a headshoot (and this pisses me off in DOD:S, there are plenty of random weapons), whereas luck doesn't exist in Q3, and thats why everybody can frag in CSS and DODS no matter who is playing against you but this will NEVER happen in Q3.
Yea, sure, tactics, teamplaying..those are something that a Q3 may lack at all, but the most difficult skill to get is aim, and you won't show a Q3 pro player how to aim, deffinitely. That is the big difference: it doesn't matter how good is your technique if you miss the first shot, the Q3 wont. It's really simple in that aspect, the aim you get by playing Q3 you don't get it by playing any other game and aim is the principal skill in FPS. Sure, if you are not an aimer you have to be something else in order to succed...but most situations in a FPS are done by aiming, so you are in disadvantatge there.
I've been playing FPS for loooooong time and consider myself able to learn fast and to be an above-average player really fast...except for Quake and similar games: I'm tooing slow for those games...
29 september is launch day of 5850
"Instead of thinking the grass is green, I think the grass appears green to me. And this saves me a lot of time by the way, i dont get embroiled in arguments like beethoven is better than mozart, or rock is better than soul. I define such things as meaningless. And people get into arguments like that I just say, well, Beethoven seems better to me than Mozart most of the time, I don't say Beethoven is better than Mozart." from this.
In regards to Q3 vs CS/COD vs BF1942etc, its all opinion and preference, and there is no way of proving one is better than the other..as it is personal preference, and opinion which we re all entitled too. LOE, get into a CAL-I...no even a CAL-m scrim, and see how you do. Probably jsut the same as a person who doesn't play Q3/UT will do against a Top Q3 player. As for the randomness argument, most people like poker over chess. You cant tell me a pro poker player makes it the finals on luck alone, but it doesn't mean there isnt a little luck involved either fully calculated games, where the outcome is known tend to become boring, and if Q3 is like you say, totally calculated.. where is the fun in that.

There is a difference. First, I don't think anybody is talking about which game is better because obviously everybody has an opinion just as everybody has an a$$. What we where talking about was which game is the most demanding one skill-wise: an average player will never frag against a pro player while you can do it in plenty other games.
Also you named luck...Q3, like RTS, are not affected by luck. Which means that if you are really good and play against somebody which is not as good, you will NEVER lose. Never ever. This doesn't apply in probably the vast majory of games: all guns have their "range" and stuff and you can hit somebody even though you didn't aim...thats something it barely happens in Q3 (ok, you can air-rocket somebody...but if you are bad you will hit 1/100). Of course somebody better than you will have the highest chance, but if you are the luckest bastard ever, you will win. Thats all...
You know, just for the sake of comparison, CSS would be like poker and Q3 like chess: in the first one luck is involved, but its deffinitely not involved in the second one. Which of both is better? That depends on you...I like all four games, just depend on the situation
Oh, jeezzzzzzzzzz, lets stop this frigging OT...
Anybody knows anything about the 5850? A Spaniard web mentioned NDA doesn't go off 'till wednesday..yet they haven't received the sample yet...weird..
This thread has turned into 5870/5850 into a "which games requires more skill" thread.
Posts should be deleted and warnings should be handed out imo.
With that said.. 5850 releases tomorrow so benchmarks should be out soon.
I don't want to close the thread because a list of reviews is a pretty handy thing and the 58xx series is pretty new. OTOH this thread has been thoroughly derailed for days and is stinking up the news section with the trash talking between some pretty UL7R4 ><7R3/\/\3 |-|4RD(0R3 94/\/\3R5 (lol).
So I'm going to ship it off to the ATI forum and let the mods there decide what to do with you.

5870 is 2x 4870.
If you use i7-3Ghz for 4870 review.
Then should use i7-6Ghz for 5870
FYI: like 90% of 5870 CF benchmark scores (everything except 2560x1600 8AA), are CPU limited. Results at all resolutions are almost the same.
This would be good time for Intel to release that 10Ghz CPU they had on their presentation slides for 5 years before C2D![]()
