I find it interesting that ATi finally got there naming conventions back together from when they used to make sense to something coherent, I dont think nVidia has yet though, I think that after the 8-series they have been pretty lost. Im not biased however, just an observation. Should make for an interesting Q4/Q1.![]()

I find it funny, that if AMD does this, they basically jacked alot of early adoptors as I doubt the price of the 5890 can be over 400 dollars and will likely just be a 5870 replacement.
5850 X2?
as long as it isn't as big as the 5870 then I could see it being a big hit providing it's priced at around $400-450 .
The 5870x2 is already 1" longer than the 5870. I hope Nvidia's cards aren't as long and stick with the current lengths ( the 5870 length is posing problems for some mid tower cases and the X2 will more than likely not fit in a good few more )
I don't know if I'm just being pessimistic but I'm getting the feeling that the 5870x2 may not be equivalent to 2 5870 1GBs but more similar to the 295 ( eg fully functional cores but reduced clock speeds for thermal / power envelope reasons ) Now I hope I'm proven wrong but I won't dismiss the possibility until I've seen otherwise.
A hemlock card that was on demo playing AvP in DX11 ( I apologize I forget where I saw the article with the reference ) was said to be running at 725 core / 4Ghz memory. Now perhaps ATI actually intend to have a reference 5850x2 this time but I just have this feeling that it may in fact be our 5870x2 ( full shader / tmu / rop counts ) but with reduced clock speeds. Now this wouldn't be the end of the world and honestly it would make much more sense price wise (being that 2 discrete 5870s would be faster than the X2 ) As nice as it would be to have a X2 running at 850 / 4.8Ghz, those speeds just might not be attainable due to heat / power barriers.
I expect a similar fate with the eventual GTX 395 although Its tough to say if we will see one on 40nm or not. I don't knock this approach as the GTX 295 did more than fine with reduced clock speeds over the 285. I personally don't want to see cards in excess of 300watts anyways ( and to my understanding I don't believe that would be covered under official PCEI specs )

they are different if that's what you intended,pictured here-
http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/news/...mages-surface/
For 1 the reason I decided to order a 5870 is I am finally able to RMA my 4870x2 ( after like 6 months of waiting ) and this process will likely take 2 months so I need a card for the time being. Secondly until I see games consistently become VRAM bottlenecked at 1920x1200 4xAA, I could care less about 2GB. Yes in the future this will be the way to go but I don't see that happening in the next 6 months.
The reason for 2GB 5870s is to provide expansion for Eyefinity. Obviously running 2 or more 22+ LCDs will require a good chuck of VRAM so for those wanting to do so the 2GB model will make more sense. Under normal circumstances I still expect 1GB to be adequate for some time to come.
As far as killing off DVI, that won't happen any time soon. It is still the mainstream format on consumer computer LCDs and although HDMI is becoming more and more common it still will be a while yet before reference designs discontinue use of DVI.
Again its the whole waiting game. I've played it before and I've rarely felt that waiting was worth it. Worst case, can sell a card at a loss if buying a "newer" one becomes so important. Its hard to say when we will see a 5890 ( I personally expect we won't until after the GT300 releases ) but for me it is not worth waiting 2+ months for a card that will be marginally better. There is no need to insult someones purchasing decision. If you don't want it or need it that is fine but that is your personal choice. Please try to be a little more open minded.

mini display?
You mean mini displayport? The apple connector for apple laptops and apple screens?
Somehow, I don't see that becoming a standard just like every other mini implementation of a display connector they have made.
A little protip for you: most screens out there now that accept digital, use dvi connectors. High end screens and ones that use dual link dvi such as the dell 3008 or 120hz screens also need it. Professional monitors also use dvi.
HDMI should stick to the a/v and htpc world with DP eventually replacing dvi.

gt240 as performance?
pfff as if gt240 would be able to compete with a 5770...
the naming says it all, slower than a g92 aka gts 250...
if thats perf then gts 250 is highend?
260 = ultra highend?
275 = mega highend?
285 = xtreme highend?
295 = omfgwtfubermegawinnn1111 ?
the only interesting part from nvidia to compete is going to be gt300 and i doubt itll be out this year...
I think the gt 240 is an updated g200b core on 40nm so it can be sold cheaper... not sure though
Do we even know when the 59xx series come out ? o_O , Honestly Im waiting for 6 port 5870 for some 3 way fun. I hope the price is just >.< .
I hope to see the 5890 with dual dvi and a hdmi in the middle of the two so that way classified owners can removed the exhaust shielding and run 4 way crossfire on them like the 4890 current 5870 you would need to desolder the top two ports.
*insert face palm smilies pic here*
And we all know 4890 came out weeks after 4870x2
Anyways stuiped it get an argument over dual cards vs. #870x2
Also 5890 coming out this year? That just seems unlikely to me. I would of thought we would of seen like 32nm shrink in 2010 q2 or something.

HD5890 ? I think it'll not come just yet. See how long it took for HD4890? Plus there is no reason to release it. No new fab process, no competition and their base HD5850/5870 range was just released.

If the 5890 is coming out within 2 months, dont i feel stupid for buying a 5870Not sure if that article has much truth to it. Well see, only time will tell.
4890 was a whole new ASIC, though it was mainly a small tweak from RV770.
A 5890, as it sounds right now, will just be a higher bin that can maybe get stock clocks at 950/1000mhz.
I would think the 5890 would be targeted at an early Q1 launch, to try and combat the G300 whenever it might be released.

Alright - I have just performed some heavy cleanup on this thread and will now unlock it. Given the topic this is probably a futile action, but I'm going to give it a shot (what can I say, I'm new).
