I have the 500 gig version and its absolutely silent. I can't tell if its on and it generates barely any heat. It doesn't even feel much more than room temp, ever.

+1 for samsung spinpoints. I have the 5400rpm version; its quieter, cooler, and faster than my seagate 7200rpm's (granted they have half the cache of the samsung)
