Lapped my Phenom 965 and lost 7c

I was idling every day at about 42c at 1.43v and gaming load at 54-55c which I found very high for that voltage so I decided to lap the cpu. While lapping it seems the whole outer edge of the cpu was higher than the center as that was the first place I hit copper (all the way around) I didnt take a pic during but heres a pic of the finished cpu. Im now idle at about 34-35c and gaming load at 49c.

Its not lapped to a mirror finish but its pretty close, I went up to 2000 grit which still leaves a bit of micro scratches

Nice job, looks really good, and a 7c drop should allow another 50-80mhz oc?

That's a significant drop in load temps. What are you using to cool, or did you drop it into the Asus M3 board in your sig?

Mirror finish is extremely overrated and often counter-productive, as people tend to get it by using polishing agents, which will hurt your temps. Don't bother sanding any further, 7C drop at load is great, you'll just be wasting your time.

Wow nice gains. I got ~2C from lapping mine. Though I also tried to improve the lapping on my TRUE at the same time, which proved to be counter productive.

That's a nice drop. When I lapped my 940 I only gained about 2C idle and maybe 5C under load; it didn't net me any extra OC headroom.

Agreed I've done some lapping before haven't for quite a while. Risks generally don't justify the result. Most good thermal paste will fill in any spots between the heat sink and the chip anyways. Plus you can usually add a better fan or another case fan and drop temps too w/out losing your warranty.

However nice job on your chip. I hope if you spent that much time on it your heatsink is that shiny.

Thanks everybody, it seems the outer edge was preventing good contact in the center I had reseated the cpu 3 times trying to figure why at 1.43v I was idling at +- 42c....and most of the time it was 42c +. When I started lapping the first 10-15 minutes was trying to get off the edges of the cpu. then finally I hit the center. I checked the temps before the lapping then took about an 30-40 minutes to lap it using 600 grit then going straight to 2000 grit. I was surprised to see the cpu dip under 37c when it got to 35...34c I knew it had worked as I had never seen the cpu that low on ambiant room temps.

Pretty happy with the result Ill see if it nets me any extra mhz.

Im on Xigmatec 1284 with a 125cfm 120mm fan, my case has extremely good airflow with a 360mm fan on the side and a 250mm fan on the front. There was really nothing I could do to improve the temps and this was a last resort. Plus Im going to watercooling in the next couple of weeks so this cpu was going to be lapped anyway.

when I lapped my cpu i used a piece of glass from a picture frame. Put the glass on the table, put the sandpaper on top of the glass, wet it down a bit, and then lightly run the cpu across the sandpaper

just it.. piece of glass.. how i'd forget

When i think more about, it'd be comfortable to use sockel (ripped of dead mobo) on sandpapper.. I have bent pins several times

Great lapping job! Looks like that cpu was concave like a spoon!

I don't think any cpu will benefit that much, mine already idles at 29ºC with 1.36V and contact seems ok.

Can you oc it higher now?
