Intel's 34nm NAND SSDs launch in two weeks

Ordered mine from ZipZoomFly's eBay store last Wednesday (when they were at $239 shipped).

What is strange is that it had the older firmware as opposed to the shipment I got from Newegg couple of weeks ago which had the newer one.

Not that it made any difference, a quick update was all I needed.

Canceled my order with Buy.com as they are pretty much not sure when they will get more drives.

Now what I had a bit more time to think about it, I am not so sure I should get a second drive to raid it.

I have two 150gb Velociraptors right now that I could use, or sell them and get another Intel Drive, but the more I read, the less reason I see to getting a second Intel SSD.

Not sure what you have read , but adding a second drive in raid0 doubles the write speed from 80 to 160mbyte/s . And let that be the only thing where those SSD's are lackin , writespeed .

So when TRIM becomes available and I flash the damn thing, will it wipe out all the data on the drive?

The answer to this should be no as a firmware with trim support shouldn't be much different then any other firmware.

Hey do you guys enable WRITE CACHING on theses Intel SSD V2 drives? Also had to manually turn off DISK DEFRAG on W7 clean install. Which I thought it was auto off with these drives?

enable write cache yes .
And yes i also had to disable defrag manually after fresh windows 7 install ..

I have been waiting on my G2 for about 1 month now. It is on backorder with an etailer. Today they told me the shipment was delayed again by Intel and they might get them at the end of Oct. ((DAMMIT!!!))

They said that the original release was a "test release" and the actual release by Intel is in the middle of Oct.

Is this BS true???

Sorry...just sick of waiting for this so I can finish my P55 build.

Few places have them in stock in the US, just depends on how much you want to pay at some of them. $220-250 typically + shipping.

I am on the virge of buying 2, 160GB Intel X-25M Postville SSD's...
The only thing that worries me now is performance degration over time.

Is this fixed already? I mean...is there a firmware available that counteracts towards this?
It will be a while before i switch to Windows 7 so to have this feature in the drive's FW is critical to me.

It depends on your usage patterns. As long as you don't thrash your drives they should be fine w/ normal use. But there is no new firmware that prevents degradation.

nice SteveRo.. Funny I buy tons of stuff at newegg, and one of there locations in Whittier, CA is down the street from me and yet they never send me these promo like this. They send me stuff like 5400rpm HD, DDR2 memory, 775 combos. I bought another OEM 80GB G2 version with the combo deal and got a FREE Cooler Mater Storm Scout case. Also got my new memory today as well MushKins Redlines 1600MHz CL6 should be fun to play with..

Does anyone know when the new FW will be set for TRIM on W7?

Just got my 80GB G2 - see iometer below - seems to perform pretty close to the G1, little faster in sequential ops, a little slower in random (this with a 64 queue depth - high load). Interesting to note how well the 80GB does in random ops - look at the intel random reads compared to the 1x acard (DDR2 RAM based drive) on the bottom right in the pic below - the intel drive seems pretty impressive to me! All of these benches on my old evga 680i board

Nope. Even w/ Windows 7 currently there is no TRIM support. You just have to deal w/ the way the drives are.

That is still a big turn off for me then.
I dont like spending 650 EUR. on 2 harddrives to find out their performance is degrading over time and there is nothing i can do about it.

Sure, i've seen a lot of ppl with extensive testing concluding that the performance degration is around 3-5% over time and doesn't get worse then that but i'd rather wait for a solid solution.

I could have sworn i already read about vendors such as OCZ updating their FW in such a way that there is a clean-up started by the controller when the device is idling at xx percent.

X25-M Postville SSDSA2MH160G2R5 is the box version, this comes with the 3.5 to 2.5 Adapter for the drive bay.

It’s no different to a hard drive really. A HDD slows down with use and has to be defragmented. A SSD slows down with use and needs to be TRIMED. Anyway you look at it an Intel drive is faster than a HDD, even if the drive is in a used state.

On a personal basis I have not noticed the effect of degradation outside of benchmarks, but I have noticed slowdowns with HDD as it becomes fragmented.

Native Win 7 OS TRIM support will be available very soon for Intel drives. It’s just a matter of waiting for Windows 7 to be released later this month.

In any case 4K performance is better on a degraded Intel drive in comparison to a fresh ssd from the competition.
