    Trying The New Big WUs

I figured I would give these new big WUs a try, they only work on Linux and OS/X and you have to have 8 cores. Not bad takes about 2.3 to 2.5 days and I get around 56,000 points for it. You do have to use a special core for these and flags, more details at the folding forum... http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?t=10697

i7s, I got 6 of them on this now, of course 8 true cores would do even better. Dave?

Not sure but sure is not near as much heat coming from the rig with just cheap 6200 video cards in them. What are the i7s 130 watt?

    this made me lol.
Q: Can I try running these units on my super-overclocked, liquid-cooled quad-core system?
A: No. In our experience, fast quad-core systems tend to come in over the 4-day timeout and would thus 1) not contribute to the scientific goals of finishing these projects quickly and 2) not receive bonuses. Quad-core systems can make important contributions to standard SMP projects, and we'd encourage you to apply them there.

Its pretty easy really with Ubuntu, you have to have 64 bit, I use 8.04 64 bit as it gets a few more points than the newer versions. After I install it I update it, System>Administration>Update Manager. Reboot as required, then open a terminal. Application>Accessories>Terminal. Type sudo apt-get install ia32-libs this will install the 32 bit libraries required.

Next go up to My Places then Home Folder, create a folder in there by right clicking/create folder give it a name. Next download the special big fah6 core required, if it ask you open or save select save and it will be put on the desktop. Right click on the file, properties>permissions, put a check in allow executing.

Download the 6.24 beta double click it and extract the mpiexe to the folder you created in my places, copy and past the fah6 file you modified the permissions on into the folder also.

Next just open a terminal and type cd <your folder name> without the <> that will change directory's to the directory name you entered. Then just type ./fah6 -smp 8 -bigadv and enter your info, you do have to have a pass key to get bonus points and do not select adv methods. When you want to close the terminal hit ctrl +c.

So what PPD does that work out to if you're cranking out a big WU every 2-3 days?

For my i7 @ 3.8 that I checked I believe it was around 24,000 ppd is what I came up with...

Damn thats almost as good as WCG points wise. Now I know why our points have been down on WCG RR

Thats nice to know they are moving up on the CPU side though

too bad its just for linux too; I still havent the time to try out linux, been a few years or so since my last attempt

You could still run gpu with the I7 through linux, couldn't you for even more ppd? <<< disreguard; they do not recommend it as it could slow down the system and processor from reaching full potential

too many options now through 3 different DC progs. Its just a matter of time till WCG get gpu's setup on it

i have noticed its the other way around. my cpu cont feed enough data to the gpu unless i set the priority to high.

It is F@H though so 12 AMD cores will probably fall in PPD to 8 Intel cores

Cool rr, thanks for trying this out and posting your results. What I'm wondering now is how to get that passkey you and the faq over at foldingforum are stating?

Edit: Disregard that, found information here and here.

Not sure what this one was worth exactly, I finished it in 47:10:00 with an i7 920 @ 4.5Ghz. The points went in with 2 other WUS for a total of 66,026. I am going to ask Bruce over there again if he can check what the total was for this WU...

I know when it first starts it says something about steps and its usually a big number like that, what work unit did you get? It may give you the small ones for the first 10. I am liking these big ones...
