Need Help With Choosing the Right Camera

I have never bought a DSLR camera before and was wondering which one I should get. I am mainly going to be using it to take pics of computers and parts.
I want to be able to achieve the same picture effect and quality that the ones on MDPC have. The price cant be higher than 700. I also dont mind buying a
    used one if that helps.

I would look into a Canon Rebel XS around that price range. You could get an XSi and still be under budget, but you can grab an XS and spend the extra money towards some better glass.

With the 18-55mm kit lens: $500

    mdpc?

anyway... i hope you're going to be getting into photography and not just taking pictures of computer parts. you could use a $50 light box and a $75 point and shoot for that.

A Rebel XS will be a fit for you. Based on your price and terms of needs.

And a dirt cheap prime lens is a very good addition, here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...0mm_f_1_8.html.

They are both very good performing DSLRs for the price. You can't have a bad choice bet. the two.

Just don't believe when people say a D40 is a subpar DSLR because it only runs w/ 6 megapixels, LOL.

I don't own a D40 or a D60, but my friends have, I happened to try both cams. way back when I was in planning to buy my own.

    BTW, mine's a Rebel XS.

    *Edit.
The pics. from MDPC you've posted can be done with just a kit lens, and with some post-process on Photoshop perhaps.
But with a cheap prime lens such as one I've given above can give you much better pics, good when you are taking a close-up to semi close up shots.

.:Nismo: A Nikon D40/60 or a equivalent from Canon's Digital Rebel line (XS or maybe XTI if you can find one used) + a 50mm prime (<$100) will do just fine if your main goal is to get some nice photographs for MDPC. Just remember that it's not the camera that makes the photo, it's the person taking it - Edelweiss on MDPC was taken with a Sony point-and-shoot if I remember correctly as well as a few others most likely.

labs23: +1 on the primes lens, just note that Nils/MDPC doesn't allow much post-processing other than simple cropping and maybe some sharpening (I believe original camera RAW files are required to be sent as well).

sort of... for product photography especially this type it's all about controlling light a shadows. doesn't matter what camera you use or what lens since you should be shooting at f/8 or f/11 anyway. f/8 or f/11 with perfect lighting, even the crappiest point and shoot will look good. well... maybe not the crappiest

+1, I've just seen new people to photography drop $5-9K+ on bodies, glass and equipment on other forums expecting great pictures to automatically start coming out of their camera (and asking other why they aren't)

if you're not going to be getting hardcore into it then buy a Canon G10 or a Nikon P6000, I've got the P6000 and it does 90% of what i want and its got a hotshoe so i can trigger remote flashes w/ it... i actually did some shots w/ alien bees w/ it the other day lol.

I'm gonna suggest you get an older Canon XT and a 50mm f/1.8 if your wanting to be cheap and go canon... as for Nikon i'd suggest a D50 or D70 and a 50 f/1.8... I'm an Nikon guy but i love the Pre-XS Canon gear and all of their upper end pro gear... that stupid consumer interface SUCKS...

    Canon G10, XT, XTi, 20D, 30D
    Nikon P6000, D50, D70, D40, D80
