It is exceptionally fast on the synthetic tests. I don't think they use a well threaded test suite as do most reviewers. Something on that front needs to change before we can really see what these CPUs can do.

Power usage dropped, faster clock per clock and now supports 48gb of ram on x58.
It'd be great if they revealed the turbo-boost specs as well. Maybe they are similar to Lynnfield, which would be very good.

No surprise really, Core i7 is already overkill for the majority of users with it's 8 threads. Must wait for software support ^^

Orly? I saw also 27% bust in CineBench, 54% in MS Exel & 48% in Vantage CPU test. Clearly shows potential for well optimized multithreaded environment.It's lacking performance everywhere except Sandra, which is useless

Still, when P965 came out in 2006, most people were running 1gb, and it supported 8 times that. Now 8gb seems within sight for many.
Now most people who run i7s have 6gb ram. The limit with Westmere will be also 8 times that. So 48gb won't seem too out of reach in 3-4 years.
For crunchers, this chip is a wet dream.
For everyone else, meh.

Intel has never released a major tech update and reserved it only for EE cpus.
Who the hell will buy it? Even if the margins are huge, no average joe would even think about forking out $1000+ for a cpu. A few enthusiasts here and there, and that's about it.
It would also be pretty stupid if Westmere W3xx0 series come out since X58 owners can just drop them in.

^ or the 975 goes down in price to about $450 like the QX9650 is now, then just drop a TRUE spirit in there and you've got a good few GHz on the clock.
Pretty sure 32nm parts will overclock higher than any 45nm Nehalems.

The numbers this thing spits out are interesting. A single chip outdoes my Sandra MIPS/GFLOPS scores by a little but I nearly double its multimedia benchmark numbers.

You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.
I smell the desktop market at best being ignored at worst being sucked in by dishonest marketing spruiking the great advantages Hex Core will bring to desktop users.
