    Dedicated PHysX card?

Hey all, sorry if this was answered else where, I couldn't find it.

I am considering getting another GPU for a dedicated PHysX card, as well as more folding potential. I currently have a EVGA GTX 260 Core 216 SSC that already has PHysX support. Is it worth it to get say a GTX 9800 to run PHysX? What kind of experience have you all had? Thanks.

New nvidia cards run Physx on the GPUs. Dedicated Physx cards are a thing of the past.

Yes, but running an nVidia card dedicated to PhysX is not.

@ OP, using a 9800 seems to be a popular choice, and will give you a nice boost in supported games. However, given that you only have a 260 216 to start with, I'd save your money and put it towards a better VGA when the next gen comes out - IMHO not enough of a boost in enough games to warrant expenditure unless you have money to burn.

I wish I had money to burn, thanks for the advice. Unless I find a card super cheap, I'll hold off to go for a newer multiple GPU card when they arrive. Maybe Christmas will bring something good or at least a drop in pricers of the higher card like 285. Thanks again.

Instead of wasting money through out the window, why don't you wait for the next generation GPU and use your present GPU for dedicated PPU. The new GPU are just around the corner, maximum a year it is not worth it to spend for that, but it is worth it to keep your old one for it.

i dont understand... why would you even think of getting a 9800 when you already have a 260 and could get another pretty cheap. and your performance gain would be much higher than adding a physx card or 9800 to run physX

Because his board doesn't support SLI.

but a dedicated PPU is completely worthless right now, physX enhancements are only usable in single play games and then its not going to show anything different if u have an NV card.

physX is also being phased out with dx11 and havoc (look at red faction gorilla), physX is outdated and overly uniform so buying for it now would be like buying an fx60 right before the core2 came out.

Good call...my bad. Yup a Crossfire board. Go CROSSFIRE j/k

Well I actually am currently running a dedicated PHysX via PCIe 1x on my rampage board.

It is useless... It runs all the aegia crap flawlessly (i.e. the flag pull test, and cow yanker), but it doesn't do anything to help in 3dMark Vantage which is why i bought it. I can't tell it's there. I hit 24.7K on vantage

u have disable gpu physX in the physX control panel. and u have ati u cant use gpu assisted physX

the easy way to tell if some1 cheated is that the AI test should score about 95-105x more than the physX score, if the physX score is higher than that they used a ppu or gpu assisted physX

Well I don't disable PPU and if I cheated it wouldn't give me a score..correct. It's hard enough to get a score, given that you have to use Futuremark certified drivers and what not.

if u like physX demo levels then yes, for normal use then there is no point. u will also need windows7 since u cant run 2 drivers at once in vista

I'm running them on Vista x86. Aegia physx and Catalyst. I ran Vantage again and I'm hitting 24,700 marks. I don't know if it helps and there are no games that I can benchmark or rather, that I would want to purchase to benchmark.

Also, does Windows 7 show an improvment with benchmarking? I downloaded and installed the OS and was dissapointed (looks like vista with a new skin). No change in marks for 3dmark06

That would be the best upgrade, but he has a P45 chipset board. The P45 northbridge is crossfire, not Sli compatible.
