Thanks! I had alot of fun with this Opteron project. Getting real itchy for a new project. Have been watching some Opterons and dual and quad socket MBs on Ebay. I dunno what to do next but gonna do something. Lost my dual core cruncher so will add at least another quad core but maybe 2.

Hopefully I will find something interesting.

    indeed ...
I'm actually eyeing on a Opteron 1389, but they have yet to come to newegg. Price also seem still high - so it might take a while before I buy.

I just looked at the Opteron overview page (http://products.amd.com/en-us/Optero...teron%E2%84%A2) and there are some very interesting low energy processors - 2373/2377. 40W is very tempting.
Maybe I go with two of those and put them into a Dual socket board.
PG: I think you have the same in mind if I read your last message correctly

AMD has so many new CPUs due out in the next couple of months it is not a real good time to buy much. Even if the new ones are not interesting or too expensive they should still drive down the existing prices. It is amazing what ya can find on Ebay too, current 8000 series CPUs for less than $100 from reputable sellers. One company bought out a Gateway build unit and had new Opteron 2000 series for $90.

I so hope the AM3 Istanbuls are decently priced. That would be sweet.

Glad ya got something from my project.

I don't know if you guys have shopped around any but a Google Shopping search for the 1354 gets the Newegg $89 and the next price closest is $145. Most are $160 - $170. $89 is still a good price.

    Gotta stay off Ebay:

If any interest you can get dual socket F board for 130$ and 1.9GHz quad High Efficiency cpus for 109$ from ebay

    Opteron 8347 2 Quad-core 1.9GHz 4x 512K 2MB PAIR=2
HP XW9400 motherboard TYAN OEM workstation WS 1207 AMD

Those use ECC REG DDR2 which shouldn't be that expensive

What gets me is how things change with 4 sockets. The difference now between the 4 2.2gz I linked and the 1.9gz you linked is 4.8gz total.

A single socket board 300mz is not a real big deal. 4 sockets and it begins to matter.

OK this MB has a 24 pin socket, 2 4 pin and 2 8 pin. I do not know of nor can find a PSU with that many 4 and 8 pin. So do you use a molex to 4/8 pin adapter or 2 PSUs?

Molex => P4/ESP connector adapters should work w/o problems

I was hoping to see prices go down but instead Newegg raised the price again on the 1354 to $109. The prices do bounce around a bit sometimes so maybe it will come back down but it is still cheaper than anyone else is selling it for.

I noticed the same thing.. I was going to pick one of these up for a cheap cruncher. Now it's between an Agena quad like the 9600 or an Athlon II X2.

Seems like you found those things while they were a perfect deal. Ever since I read this thread and was waiting to bite on them they have been either out of stock or $109. At this point though I think the best deal may be those $99 phenom II triple cores. Phenom II's in general seem to be very easy to clock up towards 3.5Ghz without trying, so even 3 cores at 3.5Ghz will beat this Opty's at the 2.5Ghz they seem to hit, and you don't need to worry about them working or not working in a given board, you already know.

If you get a Phenom II X3 be sure to look into unlocking the 4th core. Doesn't always work, but worth looking into!

It is now $119. I do not know what Newegg is doing except that it is still cheaper than anyone else. $75 was a steal even needing to get a heatsink.

at stock that's 8-10k ppd. Might hit 20 on a good day with good clocking.

There's no way ANY Phenom under 4.2Ghz is hitting 20k a day in WCG m8. The most an OC'ed Phenom I will do is 10-11k (they top out at 2.8ish)

We're in a certain section. It should be a tad obvious Also, my numbers aren't off m8.

Dave's 940 @ 3.6Ghz pumped out 17.5k PPD in WCG, so its not possible for a Phenom I to be pulling 20k PPD when they could barely clock to 3GHz.

My bad - I was looking at mine at 2200Mhz (stock) and it pulls 8-10k, 12 on a good day. So figured you get it up to 3.4ish you might push 15-16k average, and might hit 20k? Guess not...though

I'm trying to learn a little about opteron processors so would one of you be good enough to tell me about the various series and if I had a choice which to go for... eg 2350 or 8350 and why (a cheap board I'm looking at will only run 65nm) I'm wondering what I will have to pay here in UK for these but before I look .....Info would be good
