Is it just me, or does it appear that the 39xxx chips are a bit worse than the 38xxx chips?

well, it's a new batch, who knows? maybe after this someone will find a good 39xx batch.
or just buy the 38xx, it will a safe bet.

I was thinking that possibly Intel was using the 920's to roll out the d0 stepping and they weren't binning the silicon, hence you would have some 975 quality 920's in the earlier batches. Intel was probably still binning them and I am probably wrong, but it was just a thought

I have not seen so many 39xx chip yet, I will receive a 3912A888 this week. So far 38xx appear to oc better but I think it is to early to say, right?
Any difference in bclk or memory handling?

You're probably right, it probably is too early to say. I think I am just trying to see patterns within the 38xxx chips when there really aren't any patterns to be seen.

Right, this is something I figured out long ago to explain the counter intuitive "later is worse" observation we see everytime a new chip is released.
It seems like as the process matures, Intel learns more yet the chips slow down, each batch is worse than the previous batch. How can this be? WHen the 920 D0 first came out, there was no w3540 or i7 950, only the 920 D0 so every chip was labeled "i7 920 D0" even the ones that had greatly superior AC characteristcis, the 'golden' chips. Later, those same golden chips were labeled w3540/950 and Intel charges twice as much.
So it isn't that the chips slow down, it's that all the good 920s are being screened out and only the slower ones are labled 920.

I will try that. I just re-applied the heatsink and goop. Temps are already about 6-7 degrees lower under load.

    Update for 3851A262 :
old setup turbo off, multi 20x & bclk 200 -> good for 4 GHz obviously needed vcore of 1.4V set in bios (1.344 stressed cpu-z)
new setup turbo on, multi 21x (with turbo) & bclk 191 -> good for 4 GHz again but now only needs vcore of 1.31V set in bios (1.264 stressed cpu-z)

So it's not such a bad chip after all....20x just ing sucks :s
    System 1 (mine):
CPU: i7 920 D0 stable at 4.0 GHz cooled by Scythe Mugen 2000
    GPU: PowerColor HD5850 (950/1250 1.2V)
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Memory: 6GB DDR3 GeiL @ 1528 MHz
    System 2 (gf's):
CPU: i7 920 D0 currently at 4.2 GHz cooled by Noctua NH-D14 (needs more tweaking/testing)
    GPU: Club3D HD5850 (awaiting OC)
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Memory: 6GB DDR3 Corsair @ 1600 MHz

Hello everyone, first post here. I was just about to comment asking if anyone has some experience with this batch #. Got mine at Microcenter last thursday, boxed 2/20/09. Is this a good batch #?

My processor Intel Core i7 920 revision D0 batch 3901A238 from Costa Rica, 2009, week 01 is limited to BCLK 180 stable at 1.20 V. Not a good batch at all.
