Building a Sossaman rig?

So I've finally got Sammy2 crunching and GPU folding, seems like the 64-bit requirement is only there in case you want to use the CPU to fold as well (but obviously I want to keep the CPU on WCG).
Now to get Sammy1 re-installed with Linux and BOINC. Just had to sort out a little mishap with the remote management cards fighting over IPs on the router, but that's fixed now.
I also got a little sidetracked fiddling with the alsa usb sound driver, I've been trying to get 5.1 analog out of this usb card and it took writing my own patch to the driver to get it working... gotta love Linux!

The 64 bit requirement for folding is only if you are running SMP on the CPU under Linux. If it is SMP under Windows, 32 bit is fine. GPU only needs Windows (though some have gotten it working under Linux). So with running WCG on the CPU, bits are a moot point

is anyone else here folding on a sammy? i'm seeing about 25% load on one cpu core just to keep the gpu loaded with f@h... is it normal to see such a high load? i mean, i expect to see a little higher than normal because i'm running the f@h gpu client through wine, but still. it"s cutting into my crunching! i've stopped folding for the time being until i do a little more reading on the f@h forums. wcg needs to get some gpu programs going, they don't seem to have problems adding new projects so there's obviously a lot of dev work happening.
either that or f@h needs to get serious about a linux gpu client, they've been talking about it for a while now it seems.

nvidia or ATI card?

nvidia should take only a couple percent at the most. ATI does take a whole core by default unfortunately, but if you tinker enough (and pull a few hairs) you can get it to drop down decently enough. Not as low as nvidia but usually pretty close.

s604 IIRC, but the height is different so s604 heatsinks won't fit.

s423, s603, s604 and lga771 have basicly the same mouting holes

Did you avoid chopping the trace like I did

Right here. Instead of taping the card, i tape the screw with electrical tape.

those of you who have put in video cards: do you notice any problems with irq fighting?

i have an issue where every once in a while usb1 and my 9800gtx both grab irq 16, and sometimes that results in stuttering on my usb devices.
i had to add 'noirqdebug' to my grub init line to resolve that (not really a resolution, just prevents the kernel from trying to jump in to 'fix' things by disabling the irq and making it even WORSE).

i also noticed that the EDAC module goes completely CRAZY posting errors to dmesg every 100ms when the video card is doing 'work' (also known as playing X-Wing Alliance...) or anything that requires 3d acceleration.
looks like it doesn't appreciate being on a gen1 pcie 8x bus and would rather have room to stretch its legs...
i fixed that one by just disabling the EDAC module altogether!

anyway, just wanted to share that i didn't have any of these problems with the quadro nvs 290 or the geforce 8600gt because they're not quite as hungry for bandwidth. with the geforce 9800gtx, i can really see that it's starving for a wider bus.

So far, i have not experienced any problems yet.

you have a case that allows your to mount your card horizontally? if so, go for it. if not, then you have to find one that rises up vertically.

Oh yeah, the motherboard has pci-express x8 slot not x4.

Just got a weird error on sammy 2. It gives a "processor missing microcode" error, listing it 4 times (for all 4 cores I presume). What's up with that? The BIOS seems to be reading the chips OK, and it is booting off the windows disc fine

check bios version and make sure your on the newest..
could be a newer cpu and older bios.

Update the bios then is fine, but i did not bother to update it because it is too much work.

Ok my Sammy(s) build has been forever in the waiting-life has its bumps sometimes. anyways I am setting up the board, drive and PSU on a nice clean shelf so I am going caseless. After doing some reading which metal prongs at the bottom of the board i am supposed to touch together with say, a screwdriver, to jumpstart the board? I tried last night a few times had the lights on the board once I had it plugged in; but the lights seemed to flicker on and off. Now I figure i am doing this all wrong. Also I am going to setup another board and all the components just to make sure it is not any of the parts.
Just to double check I have a bunch of 2gb and 1gb for all my boards-if for now I am only placing 2 of each( of course just the same number) which slots would they go in?
