Post Selling ES processor is a risky business.

For those who are selling their ES CPUs on OCBay, be aware that we will purchase them, and trace back to who ever originally signed up for them.

This is something you don t want to do , I am asking nicely and friendly that this does not happen ... Selling an ES can really get people into trouble, it goes under the laws of "Industrial Espionage " and few other nasty stuff you don t want to be cut under.

    Please guys! be smart!

there are so many ES processors on the open market,
why don't you explain to me how so many get on the open market
and why you speak the cryptic way you do, I never understood the dynamics
    behind the unspeakable "ES" ....

but i am interested in th who's and why's????

i've never heard of any repercussions of owning one?

yaya we all knew this a long ago
but as long as they are treated the same as retail chips in our community - there's no way to stop the sales

a tip - if you have an ES - lap it

From stories that goes around I get the idea that most ES's being sold or not CPU's someone has signed for.

from the amount and ease of which you can get ES chips,
I think Intel has to rethink their process of "ES" chip control....
    Because they are everywhere.

If joe the plumber can get his hands on lots of different "ES's
imagine what a real Industrial Espionage spy like austin powers could do....

That won't make a difference, each CPU actually has its own individual microcode that only Intel can read.

I was told that ES chips are purchased at premium prices, isn't that correct? From my understanding, these ES chips are shipped to certain individuals who have a demonstrative purpose in the testing channel for Intel to test their chips before releasing them retailly. But I was told that isn't the case. Rather, individuals who are willing to pay premium price for them, buy them for personal reasons. Which is correct: 1) My understanding OR 2) What I have been told?

most ES are crap, there are some final revisions that are unlocked were the normal chip or nothing on that line would be. IE there were supposed to be some unlocked duel cores and some E0 unlocked quads well before they were supposed to be out, and exept for the final batches they are not really good

DrWho mentioned that Intel would be purchasing the ES chips they find for sale. Once in their possession it will obviously be quite easy for them to read the microcode.

Once they do, they will know who the chip was originally sent to.

btw many retail i7 chips read as 'es' in cpuz, in fact all retails i've had have read as 'es' in cpuz, so those chips may not be engineering samples at all.
    just my observation.
lets not assume someone is selling es chips because a cpuz screen shows it as that.

How old was the CPU-Z version what you used? i had a lot Core i7 CPUs (or Intel CPUs) and had never a Retail CPU that show as ES in CPU-Z

And btw, i donīt know why so much want a ES. I had hundreds of them (since S478) and all i can say is that the retail CPUs most time clock better

I agree, I just checked some of my screen shots and you are correct newer cpuz does not say es my mistake....you are correct, see this screen, I had the wprime id in my mind.

though my first c0 chip did read as es in cpuz.

So you guys are saying imprinted on every piece of silicon is a unique ID..... Pshhhh I don't buy that for a second.

Couldn't they just sand off the serial and batch code?

This is complete bull. Will you (OP) buy every single ES chip from ebay as well? There are some nice $1000 Xeons there... Not to mention Pentium III and stuff like that.

If this ES stuff will ever be investigated I'm almost willing to bet my next paycheck on the fact that Intel releases most of them on purpose... Perhaps the wrong ones are in circulation, then

I also wonder what Intel has to lose on having these chips in circulation.

    That's great.
Those 'people' that currently have ES chips should then list them for sale for, say, the price of an Extreme Edition I7 since this sounds like a garunteed transaction...LOL

    I could use an upgrade
    Dual i7 Xeon X5550 | SuperMicro X8DTI-F | 24GB ECC REG DDR3 | 3 x 40GB Intel X25-V RAID0 Boot | 2 x 150GB VelociRaptor RAID0 Working Space | Quadro FX3700 | Windows 7 x64

IMHO, ES's are not all they are cracked up to be.
