Maybe you have reached the limits of the motherboard. There are better boards for oc'ing 45nm quads but I wouldn't spend the money for a new board to gain an extra 50-100mhz.

Ordered my SLB8V yesterday evening and it arrived this morning at 8:30am. Now all I need is to wait for the motherboard to arrive...

My P5Q-E arrived about two hours ago so I'm well happy. Batch is L834A857 and VID is 1.2500 (which means absolutely nothing seeing that both the best and worst Q9550s have that VID). Time to OC.

I would go for a new motherboard before trying expensive cooling, unless high temps are the thing holding you back. I think the Gigabyte EP45-UD3P or UD3R are better suited for overclocking 45nm quads and the price is very reasonable. Extreme cooling doesn't hurt either though.

Well first impressions of my chip are poor I tried for 4GHz (471x8.5) up to 1.375vcore and the system wouldn't post, and this was with the BIOS that came with the board - 1306, dated early August 2008. I just flashed to the latest BIOS and I'm hoping it will make a difference...

try to get 471x6 stable with 1:1 ram ratio first m8, maybe is other thing that is holding you back.

It's getting ridiculous. This was my most recent attempt after flashing to BIOS 2101, still no post.

    471x8.5
    400MHz strap
RAM 942MHz 5-5-5-15 (it's GKX so no problem)

    CPU Voltage 1.4500
    GTL 0/2 Auto
    GTL 1/3 Auto
    CPU PLL Voltage 1.58
    FSB Termination Voltage 1.36
    DRAM Voltage 2.0
    NB Voltage 1.4
    NB GTL Ref Auto
    SB Voltage 1.2
    PCIE SATA Voltage 1.5

    Load-Line Calibration Enabled
    CPU Spread Spectrum Disabled
    PCIE Spread Spectrum Disabled
    CPU Clock Skew Auto
    NB Clock Skew Auto

I was using 1306 bios...can anybody suggest the best bios for overclocking a 45nm quad in this board? If it is the chip that is this bad, there's no way in hell I'm keeping it, and if it's the board, I'll happily change it

Update: Tried 471x6 as you suggested, with same settings (except vcore 1.4), system still freezes. FSB hole?

OK now it's beyond a joke: I've gone all the way down to 400 FSB and I tried x8 for 3.2GHz with 1.3 vcore, and the system still wouldn't post. Dud motherboard? System is absolutely fine until I raise the FSB.

Set the strap to auto, NB voltage to 1.3 (yours is a little on the high side for a P45), GTL's to 0.680 for the CPU AND 0.670 for the MCH, FSB Termination voltage to 1.2, PLL to Auto

Trying to increase the FSB to that level without changing the GTL's is nigh on impossible.

Oh, and leave the SATA Voltage alone...

Amazingly I managed to boot at 3GHz, but 375 FSB is the highest I can go. I tried these exact same settings for 400 FSB and no post...

Yeah I've been trying different settings from my previous attempts (e.g. NB and VTT are down to 1.2v), and still no luck. I'll give your suggestion a go and get back to you. Thanks.

I agree that raising the FSB to 471 is a big ask, but 400 FSB should be childsplay for this setup...

I tried your suggested settings first at 424x8.5 and no post, then I lowered it to 400x8 and still no post.

take it easy man, take a read here

and also ask for a bios profile to the people using quads. Im sure is just a stupid setting in bios that is holding you back.

I hope so. Perhaps flashing to 2101 BIOS wasn't the right thing to do, and now I'm not sure whether to change back or just to keep trying with the same BIOS. I'll have a look through that thread and hope for the best. Thank you for the help.

There are a lot of good boards for dual cores, I'm sure that DFI is great for them. Im not familiar with it but I know they make good boards.

I'm amazed... I managed to get to desktop with 3.4GHz. This has cheered me up no ends - I think I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel. All I did was change "Common Performance Level" to 10 and all GTLs are at 0.65. Onwards and upwards, I hope. Stability will be the next hurdle.

Up to 3.8GHz now (450x8.5) and it's just a case of going to BIOS, increasing the FSB, and she gets to desktop every time with no problems at all. 4GHz is looking effortless now.

I still have a lot of work ahead - I have managed to get to desktop at 471x8.5 but I'm getting BSOD reguarly even with 1.375 vcore. I have to play around with some settings to get the FSB stable, particularly the GTLs, but from there it should be pretty simple.

    Amen to that.

I'm Priming at 471x6 and one of the threads gets an error after just a few seconds.

10 hours later and still can't get a few seconds of Prime95 without errors, so I'll take a break for the weekend. Great CPU and motherboard but a total ***** of a combo to overclock given the plethora of options in BIOS. The most frustrating thing is that I know I can get 4GHz stable, I just don't know what voltages to use. Thanks to those who helped.
