    Intel Speed Binning 1000 i975s

This isnt necessarily surprising, hopefully it will yield them the results they want... as we all know both AMD and Intel like to give their best overclockers binned chips.
We learned that the upcoming Core i7 975 is not just a clock-bump from the current top-of-the-line model, the i965. Core i7 975 packs a lot of optimizations under the copper bonnet [IHS], but that is not all.

Intel was the undisputed king of overclocking for almost three years now and AMD changed that with the introduction of Phenom II, clocking it as high as 6.45 GHz on public events. Verified CPU-Z database show the highest clocked quad-core at 7.1 GHz and you've guessed it right, it's Phenom II again. This fact doesn't sit well with enthusiastic engineers at Intel performance labs and their answer is no less than around a thousand speed binned i975 units that Intel will use in various events and sell to selected crowd in order to overtake AMD off the highest spot.

975 is a D0 version. Not exactly "a lot of optimizations" under the hood. You make it sound like something it aint.

Also Intel aint speedbinning 1000 975. They easily sell 10000 of these.

do you think its possible they are saying they have 1000 picked 975s they will hold on to and only give out during the events?

Then they would only need 25-50 CPUs or so....

And considering this is a Theo story the chance of being fake and homemade is about 95%

The question is, are they binning these for LN2 or for air/water?

Very, very different chips. And if they bin for LN2, might as well ignore/raise TDP (if they ever SKU them). If they bin for air/water, the chips are useless for WRs.

    I'm hoping for LN2 chips....

if this is a choice made by intels marketing department, i could see them having no issues giving out 1000 of their top chips to make people think their other 10000 chips that are over priced will do the same thing.

You misunderstand, they are keeping 1000 that have been binned. And as far as i know they are binning for world records and raw clock speeds. Im sure we'll see some binned ones at computex. Im well aware of the fact that they could easily sell 10,000 of these but the matter of fact is that they are binning chips to try to get records and win the clockspeed crown on the latest gen of chips since they pretty much have the performance per clock crown.

Does this mean that theres less chance of picking up a good one in retail because Intel are keeping the best ones for their own direct e-peen?

Tough if you're not in that loop?

Sure, there will still be good ones but Intel are capable of binning well, I do think the chance will be slim of cherries escaping their eye.

Hmm, Good point. Since there is not much speed difference between the 950 and 975, I wonder if the odds would be better with a 950.

Its real tough to compete in benching if you not in that loop...

    exactly, you got it!

our chances of finding a good chip are close to zero now, even if we would buy them in the dozens, cause intel is filtering out the top ones... so this basically means there wont be A 975, there will be two.

    a 975 retail and a 975 special edition

so now its not even up to money anymore, you need money AND good relations to intel, otherwise its virtually impossible to get a good chip

yay for handpicking and msileading PR! who would have thought things could get even worse? intel has really leaped ahead there

I agree completely. I don't like the way the scene is going. The fun of the competition is being removed. You could be the best clocker/tweaker in the world, spend a crapload of your hard earned $$ and months finding a good chip and then have overclocker named X blow all your hard work away in a 10 min stage demo... All because the stupid marketeers get their way.. That goes for Intel and AMD
