Well actually running Windows 7 RC now but had it with Vista 64bit also. I thought optical disk transfer was using lots of cpu and therefore making different things slow, but cpu usage is still almost 0. Strange how even opening something like the start menu becomes so tied up when accessing optical storage.

It is a well known issue of old IDE bus.
When the drivers or hardware of DVD catch directly the famous/infamous INT13, nobody is working in the PC until it is released.

This is one reason why the new high speed SSD are interfaced with PCIe bus.
