Good lap job! Too bad we have to this after paying $$

What I did when I was using the HR-03 is cut off the the bits that hold the 92mm fan in place. If you make the top of the fins flat the 120mm fits much better.

Thanks, I know the feeling. It's not like TR products are cheap.

Ill give that a shot, sounds like a good idea. I'm sure a pair af tin snips will make quick work of the fins.

Anyways atleast it's here I'm happy about that. I don't have the time to install it today but when I do I'll post a couple of gpu-z screens in idle and while running furmark. I did however get around to lapping it and the base on this thing is easily as bad as a TRUE not that I'm surprised. Atleast it's alot easier to lap than a TRUE. Here is a few pics of the process, sorry for the quality.

I used your idea with the paper thanks Retro. It made clean up much easier.

I made that last post out of anger. It was mostly just UPS's customer service and the driver who didn't even get out of his truck. I wasn't even being a pain untill I talked to the last person. The main hub in Hartford ,where I live sadly, is pretty bad but when I went there they did have a couple of good employees. Still UPS dosen't hold a candle to Fedex.

First off here are some pics of the base.

Glad you managed to get the cooler today! I figured there was no hope after 6:30PM on a Friday.

Not only that, but you already have it lapped! Excellent job and photos.
Looking at your "razor test", I can see where lapping it was a good idea. That's what got me started on doing this to almost every cooler I meet.
    Glad the paper helped.

I wanted to mention before you install the HR-03GTX, that I wish I had taken more tests with the stock cooler still on the card for comparisons. Maybe you already have enough data for that though.

Well, you have now started a brand new HR-03GTX Review, with photos!
Looking forward to reading more of this one

That's a cool idea, never thought of that. I don't know if it would help my dual-fan setup, but I can see where it would be beneficial for fitting one 120mm fan. Too bad Thermalright couldn't have done that for us too.

    Edit:
BababooeyHTJ: Good plan cutting off the 92mm fins, I think annihilus has a good idea there.

I ended up picking it up at the hub, I thought that there was no hope as well. I wanted to wait on the comparisons with the stock cooler untill just before I install the HR-03. The weather has been all over the place here in CT so it will really effect my temps. What type of comparisons did you have in mind?

I just got it installed. The fan clips were useless, I had to use zip ties and I put a strip of foam inbetween the fan and the heatsink. Other than that I'm impressed. My temps are better than I thought that they would be. My sde fan is almost touching the HR-03, I got luckey there.

I'll upload some SS that I took during Ati Tool and Furmark with bouth the HR-03 and the stock cooler. My ambients were roughly the same during all the tests. The thermostat in the room read 67F and my HDD temp was 16c. This is all on a fresh install (I had some fun getting my memory stable) on 181.22 with no tweeks to the control panel. My clocks were set to 700/1512/1242, I can do more but I need to do some testing and I've been procrastonating. My stock cooler had the fan speed set to 100%.

First is a 5 minute run of Ati Tool scaning for artifacts on the stock cooler. Second is a Furmark run at 1680x1050 with 16xaa windowed.

Next is a Furmark run on the stock cooler.

This is with the HR-03 GTX

That was fast! You got that cooler lapped and installed in record time.
I'm happy with the tests you have done, I just meant regarding my own tests, I would have liked to have done a few more comparisons with my card's stock cooler. I'm not going to re-install the stock cooler though

Just wanted to mention the side door fan issue. That's good that you were able to use it. I had to use the window from my old 900 on my 902 for clearance to get the fan in. The 1200 is better for space, and because I have two fans I think that's what causes the clearance issue with mine.

Thermalright's clips could be better for sure. At least zips do the job, regardless of looks.

    Great test results
Isn't it amazing how much the gpu temp. drops.
I think your vrm temps are excellent, and that's even when running the evil Furmark
Just think how cool everything is going to run when you are doing regular gaming, that's the beauty of these aftermarket coolers.

And the 120mm fan on your card now should be quieter than the stock cooler running at 100% was.

    Excellent job, have fun

That's nothing. I have at least 500 clams invested in the various aftermarket sinks and fans on my setup. Each time I bought a new heatsink, I just kept telling myself, hey, it's cheaper than buying a good water cooling system

Thanks, I acctually get worse temps with the case open. I cleaned my fan filters the day before and I swaped out all of the tri-cools in my antec 1200 for 1900rpm scythe slipstreams. Needless to say my case isn't very quiet, not too loud but great airflow. The side fan sits right over the video card and I have another sitting on the midde drive bay directly across from the vrms.
