2 x 1gb kit on newegg.com is about 40 dollars shipped. you do the math.

My brother came home from college today and brought Sammy1 with him. When I get home tomorrow I'll have to take a picture of the happy reunion, Sammy1 and Sammy2 together.

Over the weekend I also got my hands on a Sun Enterprise 4500, obviously I've named him Sparky1. I dunno if WCG runs on UltraSparc, but I think other DC clients do, so we'll see.

As said, it's a PCI-e X8 BUT if you get creative and cut out the back end "carefully" you can run your card in it.

I knew about the x8 slot but at first I thought the long white slot was an x16 slot... then I looked at it again and realized it didn't look right!

Don't know about cutting the notch out on it... will have to see on that one!

I've done it on both Sammy1 and Sammy2 and it works just fine.
Running a GeForce 8600GT on Sammy1 and Quadro NVS 290 on Sammy2.
Just remember to put a little electrical tape over the exposed connector because it's very close to the chipset heatsink.

I'm sure it's in this thread, but can you explain to me how you did this? I think I'll be up and running Friday.

very carefully...

I took a straight razor (a hobby knife or box cutter will do too) and heated it on my gas stove (some people use a butane torch for this, but I don't have one, so the stove worked out for me). Then I carefully cut down one side of the "trough" in the connector. It takes a lot of force, even with the blade warmed up, so make sure you have lots of space and apply force downward. Heat the blade and repeat for the second side of the "trough". I found that the bottom was too difficult to cut, so I just wiggle the remaining piece back and forth until it breaks off.

I hope that makes sense.

Give it a try, and worst case, you're out 20 bucks for a new board.

while I havent got mine running, I'd pick the Intel ones over the SI ones
