the best thing this means is that AMD has got a good part in 40nm, and clocks to 900mhz this means big things for rv870...

Anyway nVidia may still compete well by lowering 250 price a bit (performance wise only, tecnological gap would be quite big in favor of 4770)
Or they can just overclock an existing card a little, slap on some faster memory chips, and give it a new name =D

well they tried by overclocking 9800gt (900gt+ in test) and it failed.
I bet 9800GT can't take more oc than that!

anyway looks like next card won't be late (4790?) giving the holes in the pcb suggesting the same pcb will be used for a faster card (between 4850 and 4870?)

then eol 48xx except 4890 that stays on top for a while.
    sound reasonable

Idle consumption is nothing short of dissapointing.
RV740 is the bloody third GDDR5 chip and they still didn't fix it.

Btw, there will be a reference card with 1GB, too, as the card has 8 memory chips so they can simply swap them for higher density chippery.

And I'm very, very surprised by load wattage and OC'ing results. Looks like TSMC 40nm is better than rumoured.

OMG, i'm so freaking happy now, i got 2 DD maze 4's, & they work on the 8600gt's so they will work on the HD4770 aswell. Man i'm going to overclock them to the moon & back

Or it might be another evidence that we'll a have a faster card soon with the same pcb, and 1 gb

Are you disappointed that it didn't beat the GTS250 or what? It wasn't supposed to (since then it would be beating the 4850 as well).

Compared to the 9800GT which it is supposed to compete with, it outruns it by almost 20%! That's huge. OCd 9800GT is still 7% slower than stock 4770.

4770 seems to be as great as predicted. Only idle consumption was a bit disappointing but maybe with custom profiles with downclocked memory will do the trick?

Seeing how big a difference in power consumption there is between different versions of the same GPU in that chart (Sapphire vs reference 4850 in idle, 20w lower), I'm confident that the different vendors will somehow make up for the disappointing power consumption in idle mode with different versions of the 4770.

What I'm curios about is max OC 4770 Vs. max OC GTS 250 vs. Max OC 4770 w/o crappy cooler.

I was looking forward to the cooler on the 4770 that was in the presentation slide. I'm going to wait on one that actually exhausts the air out the back. Maybe one will be out on release day.

I really hope they can come out with a single slot solution. With the 40nm process a single slot should be quite doable. I'm planning a micro-atx build and am considering these in crossfire. Not too much heat output with a very good performance. Double slot coolers and I have no pci/pci-e slots left.

It does exist! Now someone just has to make use of it.

The odd thing is, the white lines on the pcb match up exactly with the awesome cooler. If the new, crappy cooler is indeed the stock one, it was a recent change.

I'd buy that card over an HD 4850 or GTS 250 personally. My guess is that the original 4770 OCed too well, hence the neutered version that doesn't completely stomp and cannibalize the 4850 (although with the OC results we've seen that still might be the case for the neutered version). Here's hoping for non-reference versions or a 4860 down the road.

The original cooler was too expensive.
When you can spend $5 on a cooler or $2, which one is going to "better" in the manufacturer's eyes?

Can we expect a HD 4790 equipped with a full fledged board and cooling solution ? With improving and maturing fabrication process, 900 MHz stock clock RV 740 equipped with a 1.25 GHz GDDR5 isn't out of question IMHO.

    Seriously just stop...

    128-bit + GDDR5 = 256-bit + GDDR3

Doesn't matter how many times people hear this, they are still -bit horny.

Is this still set to launch on the 28th?
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

If you can charge $99 with the crappy cooler or $109 with the good one, considering those costs, which one is going to be better? It's too obvious
