Oh, when have you started crunching? Only the validated results are counted. So, if you just started then it will take a couple of days until you see your real results.

If I run a quad, and 4 threads to crunch, does the amount of memory matter much? Am I ok with crunching with 2gb or would I see a big improvement with 4gb? I'm still in the process of building a crunching rig.

2GB should be enough for a quad.

I've tried 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB with Vista Ultimate 64 and a Q6700. The amount of memory above 2GB (never tried less) made no difference as far as I could tell.

For now, even 1GB is enough for a Quad cruncher assuming you run on XP. But with memory prices being as they are, I'd say get at least 2GB to make it future-proof, those WUs ain't gonna get smaller.

Only time you need more than 2GB in a cruncher is if you run vista and use the pc for other things as well, or have a dual socket machine / I7 with HT enabled.

Noob question: can you run WCG whilst not being connected to the internet? Does BOINC create a queue which is then uploaded whenever you connect to the internet or does it just never upload the completed WU's?

It nags you all the time about having no connection, apart from that it works as long as you have WUs left in your Queue.

You can set your activity level in the manager to stop trying to connect all the time ie Activity > Network Activity Suspended but remember to change that when you want to upload or it'll keep stopping. Also you have to make sure your work doesn't sit so long it expires.

So I took a look at D_A's list and I'm wondering why

there is general agreement that the Q6600 represents the best bang for the buck as far as a cruncher goes.
From looking at the chart, it seems to me that even a stock i7 920 blows a Q6600 out of the water. And I also noticed that server operating systems tend to have much higher ppd, why is that?

Because for a very, very long time the G0 Q6600's were the best by far..
yes, today a i7-920 is a damned good choice especially when you get one over 3600mhz..

Lots of people use server 03 or 08 for the stability factor.
I like Xp64bit as it's a smaller footprint and very stable..
    Also cheaper to buy..

It's easy to get caught when reading through long threads on forums like this by the sheer passage of time and the advances in technology along the way. It took me a while to get used to checking the dates on those kinds of posts and threads as I was constantly getting myself confused (more than usual that is).

Where do I go to set it up so I have more than 2 or 3 projects waiting just in case I lose contact with the servers for a few days

I'm assuming, CaptMorgan, that you mean 'more then 2 or 3 WORK UNITS waiting, not projects.
hotwaxisbad is on the money for additional work units, but if you want to add more actual projects it's a different story.

Yes I mean work units-my terminology is probably a little off from time to time. As in projects I am enlisted in all WCG has available and am signed on to take on any of the new ones when they become available. When I changed my settings to 5 days it downloaded a chunckload; which leads me to believe that my rig is capable of a lot more than what I was giving it up till now. More ppd!!!!!!!!

Ideally with my Q6600 running at stock I want to allow my unit to crunch all the time- effectively and at top potential at this point. If the time comes and I need my rig for something I can slow things down to allow me to do school work and rev them back up again when I am finished.
1?, I only need to have my desired preferences in BOINC and not through My Grid in my WCG profile? Or should I have them calibrated?
    Thanks

The smart way to do this is to have the profile in WCG set to max usage and then if you need the machine for something else, right click the taskbar icon and hit snooze, just don't forget to unsnooze it when your done or Dr,.Sig will schedule you for "motivational" sessions at his office..
What he calls Motivational the world used to call Brain Washing!
I mean why does he need electro shock equipment for simple motivational sessions.
    Be warned!

Actually, when BOINC is snooze'd, it'll un-snooze after about an hour. If you want it stopped for more than an hour, you can either close the BOINC manager (assuming you don't have it installed as a service) or go Activity > Suspend.

If you're only doing schoolwork, there isn't any need to stop/suspend BOINC, unless said schoolwork involves CPU-intensive programs. I basically only pause BOINC for some games (some have issues with BOINC, others don't) and if I'm doing something like ripping a DVD or music.

I'll try to update the tips at some point. Been spending most of the day listening to a number of classical music CD's I recently purchased.

    Hi All!
Plase advice .. what should i do with such WU what are
    running(calculated) abnormally long time ?

    Should i abort it ?

the situation is here : ( direct link.. http://img242.imageshack.us/my.php?i...052009help.png )

i suspended it manually several times then restarted
( forced to run this WU like by disabling/suspend other WU's )
so it seems now running again

but is it worth to waist a time on this ? if it is(could be?) broken anyway or ..
