It could only happen to me....
Safe mode: vista loads as far as crc disk systems then bsods
Any one know what I need to do to fix this
If it's of any consequence ...evga 680i sli board and xp runs fine!

have you tried changing the sata controller to IDE mode in bios. I had an issue on my abit that did that when it was in AHCI mode.
I'll try anything just now...thanks

stupid? but is this a fresh install or upgrade?
I know some AMD setups will not install Vista with more than one dimm and IIRC only in slot one. After install no problem. Doubt that would help with Intel as I thought it was the AMD chipsets causing the problem but maybe it is a Vista problem. Worth a try if nothing else helps?
Wfo...I have no Idea about bios....come to think of it when I downloaded the latest drivers in preparation for this I didn't even see bios files...good one.
INFRNL, Fresh install
Poppageek, It doesn't feel like dimm problem...maybe irq, but like I say crc disksys???

sometimes vista won't install unless it only has one stick of ram. stupid I know. but you need to try it and it wont take but a second to pop out the stick and try it. you can put it back in after install if it works.

It is clearly having an issue with your HDD...Try a different one & reload.
Also. load with std clock speeds and a good working DVD SATA

About to strip it all down so 1* ram 1* card new bios and have another go.
Dak, I'm feeling the same but only had 3 drives to try (tried them all) They are all IDE!! ...if this doesn't work I get another sata drive to see if that helps

If you are sure all H/W is good, switch to SATA. I had this same problem with my son's comp, switched to SATA & Voila...Don't believe it ram, card, etc. The O/S is getting corrupt. I just installed VISTA64 on old P5K Pro IDE drive and it took forever, and that was with a DVD SATA.

I installed vista on an old 8 gig ide last week with no problems; but yes it does take a long time, lol.
This seems like a very unusual situation. I am one that is not very good at help unless I am there with you. Being that you are on a 680i, shouldnt be any problems. The only problem I have had recently was with an old skt 754 system, but I think the mobo is bad. It will crash during install with 2 sticks of ram; but after install with 1 stick; 2 stick will still crash @ 1st windows screen.
There isnt anything you are overlooking in the Bios is there; something silly that would be easy to overlook?
The story so far:
Stripped down to 1 stick of ram and 98gtx, clr cmos and finally managed to get vista on...tried to add stuff..ram ok, cards not, reporting irq problem (I've not played with that for almost 20 years) then remembered to load MB drivers, no go, need newer. downloaded but would not load...... just about to try again cos reported as corrupt.

If it's an older board the bios probably doesn't support Vista. When Vista was new I tried loading it on 4 different DFI boards with the B3 quads. It would freeze at finishing installation every time.
Remember the MS micro code patches? That's why my suggestion was a bios update.
I had to buy an Asus board to actually get Vista 64 installed 2 years ago.
On a side note, I spent yesterday assembling my only remaining DFI P965 board in a case with some new hardware for my Dad. I forgot how picky the board was about PSUs. In the past it wouldn't post with a known good Silencer 750. It posted and ran fine with a Silencer 610 and another Silencer 750.It doesn't like the OCZ 600 in this rig because it would not post.
I picked up a cheap $50 Gigabyte board this morning so I can rid myself of the finicky DFI.

After this fiasco I'll be picking up a K9A2 platinum and 5050e this week with a little luck. Maybe this one can go back to xp if I can find some cheap cards...I'll keep playing until the new one arrives
