Is this build worth the price

I've noticed a Dell based on core i7 on a local computer shop. Specifications are listed below:

    CPU : i7 920
    RAM : 4096MB (1066 Mhz)
    HD :500 Gb
    VGA: HD4850 512 mb
    Display: S2209W (1920 x 1080) 1080P FULL HD 22"
    DVD±RW Double Layer
    Win Vista Premium Tr

for 1.588 $. It looked expensive to me but a magazine called it a great choice for performance and price. What do you think?
    Asus P5K SE
    MSI 256MB RX2600PRO DDR2
    Core 2 Duo 6550 @ 2.8 ghz
    OCZ 2x1 GB DDR2 800 mhz

What about chassis? Power supply? Motherboard? Optical drives? Dell will make it on an OK budget, but look at dell.com for direct prices. Other than that, you should be able to build a better (overclockable) machine for the same or so, and know it's all quality.

What about a case, mobo and power supply? I'd still rather build my own though.

EDIT: Beat me to it Bobsama.

    Case - $100, Mobo - $100, PSU - $70

Still losing money plus a 920 is useless if you can't clock it.

on the build 4GB of ram is stupid it need to be tri channel (so 2 or 6GB) and u will most likly be getting a POS MB and psu so i wouldent go for it. and dont get a 1900x1080 monitor they couse problems for gaming get a 1900x1200 but then u should get a beefier card like a 4870 1GB

Do you honestly think I could've given you pricing information on it two posts ago not knowing which one it was?

The 920 clocks to 4Ghz 24/7 quite easily. Running it stock is a tragedy unless it's in a notebook and you CAN'T clock it.

Guess I can't disagree with you there. I personally can't stand a store bought rig.

$100 for X58 board? Uhhhhhh...................... lowest I've seen was $185 for the Gigabyte UD3R...

    EDIT: MSI X58 Pro--$170 AR, otherwise $190.

Where do you find an X58 for $100?
Heck, even I would be interested in that.

If you're shelling out money to buy computer parts, buy computer parts that you have control over. Buying these things from manufacturers are pretty much dead-ends and not upgradable. As Perkam has mentioned, if you're getting a 920 with generic Mobo and PSU from Dell, you won't be able to overclock it like a $1500 machine should. If you need help putting together something, let us know and we'll help you. $1500 is a hefty budget for a decent i7 setup, you should not be left with generic parts for that much money. In fact I think Perkam started a thread for various types of builds with their prices and components listed, you might look into that.

Magazines are about 2 to 3 months behind what goes on in these forums and are geared towards normal users who don't tinker and tweak their stuff, just buy and use. If you're such an user, you should stick with those reviews.
