Phenom II 720BE revisited on Air

So I was never personally happy with the results I got from my 720 BE in the initial testing......

I lapped it tonight and primed it for a while to set in then it was time for a little fun.....

First up lets see if I could crack my old best suicide on air..... well I did it but Cpu-z is drop kicking me again.........

Plan B, based on this you can preety much see that it was legit......
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjdVwo-E4Ck

Last time I had some issues with NB clocking, no clue what happened maybe tossing it under DI or lapping fixed it.

Preety dirty results beat up OS, unoptimized.....

Also tried unlocking 4th core, no luck.

    Tired, headache, off to bed.....cheers.

    Nice one

So, lapping was worth an extra 100MHz ?

I benched at 3720 before max suicide gain was minimal, if anything the ability to handle a load was influenced the most.

Was 3720mhz with 1.55v max before in cinebench/3dmark2006?

I also want to know temp before and after lapping idle/load

    Thx!

Temps are so screwed with this chip on this motherboard and bios , Best I could do is probe the IHS and add about a 10-15 delta for you lastviking. Obviously my room temps vary greatly depending on the mood I'm in.

If you believe aod it idles at 15C stock......yes max before was 3720 for 3d so I rolled with those setting across the board. I would not contribute it all to lapping though, I managed to teach my motherboard a few new tricks since I last tested it, plus a much better heatsink.....The only reason for lapping was due to the fact that I had already lapped the True.

Wouldn't be able to give you accurate before and after temp as I never recorded ambients before.

No. It has minimal memory options and lacks in memory performance department especially in PI type calculations.

It however excells in cpu performance.

    Sort of a trade off.

It seems like the temps are off for every 720BE out there. I agree with you, they are off around 15C. Out of cruosity how much of performance and temp gains did you have after lapping?

I was planing to lap my chip as well, but I never lapped and wondering what is the procedures and grid sizes to fallow on 720BE chip?
I have found this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVXuZ...e=channel_page and this guy is lapping an intel, I didnt know if it would make a difference on AMD chip? I also have an Xigmatek that I am planing to lap, which grid sizes do you think shall I get for it?

I cant wait you to tweak the Msimax's GA-790FXT board, I wonder how is your chip going to do with that board.

    Thanks

I honestly have my own method for lapping. You should only lap your cpu if you have lapped your HS.....

Me personally I lap wet with wet sandpaper, takes a while but its my preferred method......

Start with new sheets of 320,400,600,800 and final is a well used sheet of 800 grit. Must lap on a piece of glass. I use nothing to protect the chip from antistatic however I do it next to a stainless steel sink and ground myself to the sink the entire time...I reccomend using an old socket to protect the pins however I have lapped 5 chips in the last 2 weeks with nothing protecting pins.....Highly not reccomended though.......

Rubbing alcohol bath afterwards and then a rinse as well, blow dry it, make sure no copper flakes are left hanging around, place in a spare socket and wipe down with acetone or other equivalent. Etch in a number or model # in a corner for quick reference if you have multiple chips

This is my method and works for me, Please lets not have a debate on what final grit or method offers the best temps as I personally don't care.....

Temp diff I have no clue, as long as they dont break 55C I'm happy...

Use the same setup with liquid nitrogen and you won't have any condensation issues. This is what I due, only have a small ring of ice form between my insulation and my insulating clay around the socket

Hmmm, quite true. Instead of cooling the board such as in this case, the fans would actually be warming it.

This is the 790 GX board though, etc not enthusiast.

I wouldn't go as far to say thumbs down......I don't think anyone can touch me in cinebench type applications on the other board offerings out there. I will take cpu performance over memory performance any day.

you're result is still good, not here to say the contrary. it's that i prefer oc ram than cpu

then you will want to stick with that P45 UD3P you have in your sig Phenom II isn't a great DDR2 overclocker DDR3 seems to be pretty decent though.

Nah Np Just wanted you to know although the board is lacking it does make up for it.

The DFI and asus are tossing up some preety mean PI scores I just can't match, my ram does suck but I still don't think if I had a good set that it would make much of a difference on this board. I managed to kill the d9's removing the heatspreaders so I guess I will never know

you got it man! i'm having great time with the config in sign
anyway if i'll go for am3 sure i'll buy a ddr3 board, selling ud3r and celly

@chew: i'm sorry for your d9...anyway on ud3r they push hard even with few timings set by me and the rest on auto
goodbye my dear ut p35, i'll love you forever
