Not happy about DH's MKV playback assessment I'd rather they used non CUDA specific application such as Media Player Classic HD to provide a level playing field (0-1% CPU usage on ATi cards), but that wouldn't show off CUDA and they wouldn't have gotten their sample.

Maybe this name change is for people who don't know anything about graphics hardware then. In that case the thing that "sells" the card is the simple fact that NVIDIA has convinced someone that this part is an affordable version of a card from their latest line of products. Saying they need a name change to maintain current naming is essentially admitting that the only reason the name needs to be changed is to mislead uninformed people.
I understand the frustration but this justification doesn't make sense to me. The GTS 250 IS an affordable version of a card from Nvidia's latest line. There's no misleading happening there. G92 and GT200 are not very different architecturally, at least in ways that would matter to the end consumer. So while it might be easy to ask everyone to go brush up on reviews, the vast majority of folks shopping for a $150 card have neither the time nor interest to do so. Nvidia completely mucked up the model number transition but it had to be done. Many people would have been happy if Nvidia had taped out new chips with similiar capabilities to G92 but that would make no sense in terms of cost to Nvidia or benefit to the consumer.

This is scary though. It's one thing to bungle a model number transition but to adopt this nonsense as an official policy is a recipe for disaster. So should we now expect lower range GTS/X 3xx parts to be DX10 GT2xx derivatives?

I'm with you on that. Anand rant about it but they didn't actually include 9800+ in their tests. WTF! Just show us the results and let the informed consumer be the judge. Besides 250 and 9800+ are not the same.
    250 has:
    - a smaller footprint,
    - lower power consumption (requires only 1 power connector),
    - runs cooler (that means better oc),
    - and as far as I can tell from the other previews, it performs better than 9800+ (even though marginally).

As long as I can buy a 250 for a reasonable price, I don't see any problem.
I think people confusing the graphics chipset name with the product name. If nvidia rebagded g92 chip as gt200 then it's criminal but they are renaming their products which they can call " Geforce 200 boomshakallaka" if they want to. Having said that, I can understand the critics since the name 2xx may imply (to an uninformed customer) that this card also has gt200 chip. However, if you are into video cards as much as knowing what chipset they have, you should be aware of the fact that 250 has an older chip in it. It would have been great if nvidia was honest enough to name this new card gts 9850 or something but that's too much to expect from any company these days.

Anybody has or seen a pic of the reference card naked (without cooler)? Techpowerup has a palit card taken apart but it's palit's/gainward's own design. I'm curious if you can mount the akasa vortexx neo or the arctic cooling accelero s1 rev. 2.

It would have been sooooo funny if all the major review sites had banded together and refused to review this rancid slice o' lame cake since this exclusion bull was actually known beforehand...

    That's a GTS 250 review. I was asking for a Palit GTX 285 2gb review.

Surprisingly, the 1GB version looks pretty damn good. In many cases it's almost as fast as GTX 260. Power consumption is the lowest with the new PCB design.

Edit: Look at the L4D results. WTF? http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/P...0_2_GB/14.html

This is because the drivers used for the GTS 250 are from the 182 series while the other GPUs used the older 181 series.
