I've had my E8400 rig for over 6 months and just now getting around to trying an OC.

What's a 24/7 maximum safe temp under stress test?

Right now I'm stress testing my E8400/C0 1.33V BIOS 1.28V CPU-Z w/P5Q-E at 400 FSB 3.6Ghz CPU memory G.Skill 2x2GB at 1:1 400 Mhz and I've hit 62 degC on Core0 and 59 degC on Core1 after only 10 min of P95 blend.

Should I try for 3.8 Ghz?

I'm going to try your BIOS settings below. Thanks for posting them. And nice OC.

Well I booted with your settings but with FSB at 425 without a hitch. Starting stress testing...

No go at 425, I had an error then a lock-up. Trying 415. Temps got to 67/65. I don't think my fans are running at 2k RPM under load. I'm going to investigate this in the BIOS.

LOL! I just open my case and realized I was running the stock Heatsink and Fan. I had trouble fitting the TT "super" Sonic Tower on the CPU so I just slapped the Intel unit on.

I think a cooling upgrade is in order before I go beyond 3.5 Ghz.

Max temp with the Super Sonic Tower 1.328V CPU-Z 400 FSB is 40/39 degC. That's more like it.

Two hours into 3.8Ghz, no errors...

for the 4613mhz i don't have the settings, but for the 4054mhz stable 24/7 i do.

Okay, I'm 2hr of P95 and IBT stable with these settings, from PakaPake, Thanks. I can boot Windows at 4Ghz but after only a few seconds P95 fails. IBT loaded both cores to 60 C, surprisingly much higher temps then P95, but my temps seem to be good.

Mrbungle, stock speeds the cpu is always cold.. Try upping to 4ghz and you'll be amazed how much hotter the thing gets lol

Yeah mine sits around 36-43 @ idle (22 degree room) and that's sitting @ 4.3ghz and a vcore thats a bit higher... Load is 48-50 degree
All things considered compared to those results mine are pretty decent temps

vFSB above 1.14 will NOT necessarily damage a cpu unless you take it too far. 1.20 is perfectly safe and some older boards won't even go below 1.20, so that's stock for those boards. 1.30vfsb is when you start to get into overclocking territory. Zero danger in using 1.20 vfsb.

I do agree that you shouldn't need high vfsb settings unless you're trying to go above 400 mhz.

Either is fine. 1.24v will not harm you in the least.
I would personally not go above 1.30v, though.

Being scared of 1.20 vfsb is like being scared of putting 1.30v into a 1.25v cpu...

I have a similar chip. It lives on @ 1.2V 4Ghz. Needs about 1.35V for 4.4Ghz. Not worth the extra heat output IMO.

I think you're right about having a poor E8400/CO. I couldn't get stable anywhere near 4 Ghz. I've settled on 3.6 Ghz @ 1.272 Vcore for a 24/7 running, which is more then enough HP to run a web browser...

The highest setting in the BIOS for tRAS is 31. The only setting that goes to 65 is tRFC. I think my memory is unstable much above 400 Mhz.

my E0 runs better at low voltage than my C0 did, but it doesn't seem any better at or above 4.0 GHz. in fact, i think my C0 was a better clocker. i'll put up more when i do the work. for now, 425x9 @ 1.200 vCore load is stable.

Here are my bios settings using a Q6600 GO at 3.2 Ghz and 3.6 Ghz

CPU Config:

Disable C1E State

Disable Execute Disable Bit

Disable Virtualization Technology

Standard CMOS:

Disable 1.44 Floppy (Unless you actually have one and need it for RAID drivers)

Advanced Bios:

I disable all boot devices except hard drive and disable boot other devices. This speeds boot up time and also in case you leave a memory stick by accident in the system prevents your system from taking time to try to boot from it.

Full Screen Logo: Enable

Advanced:

Disable HPET

Voltages:

Set Memory to 2.1 V (whcih is the default for my OCZ ram)

CPU Voltage:

For 3.2 I set it to: 1.3625

For 3.6 I set it to: 1.48125

(These will vary based on your chips' VID and stepping)

Other voltages:

(All set manually do not leave them on auto)

CPU FSB: 1.4v

Memory: To whatever your ram needs

Nforce SPP: 1.4v

Nforce MCP: 1.525v

HT Nforce SPP: 1.25V


FSB/Memory:

Set Memory clock mode to Linked & Synchronous


FSB/QDR: Set to 1600 (400 FSB)

For cpu multiplier, for 3.2 to 8x, for 3.6 to 9x.

Leave Memory speed at 800mhz

I really do think you guys are overvolting your FSB termination beyond what needs to be for the low overclocks your doing. There is no need for 1.26VFSB at 3.8 and 4ghz, VFSB is only for high FSB overclocks anyway not mhz. Its still a touchy subject but intel clearly states not to go over 1.14v unless you want to risk ruining your cpu.

I dont even need to go above 1.10vfsb to get 4200mhz or 4300mhz.

Fankr you have the same ram i do just rebranded "8000" change your tras cycle time to 65, the Auto setting doesnt work well for this memory. Change the FSB strap to 333mhz, you dont need 2.10v for your memory at such low overclocks. Keep all those settings you have on disabled on Auto except Cpu spread sprectrum. I found turning them on disable like that hamperd my overclocks. You also most certantly do not need 1.26VFSB for 3.8ghz. Stop listening to these people.

You most likely have a bad batch CO, check the first page you will notice most older e8400's dont go beyond 4ghz if at all even using 1.37vcore.

So would you use 24/7 1.24vsb for 500mhz, or 467mhz with 1.10vfsb ?

See iv gone to 1.20v to test and stuff, like for me my maximum overclock is 4400mhz 489x9, with 1.36-1.37vcore and 1.22vfsb. The problem with that is i can also do 4200mhz 1.28vcore 1.10vfsb. Which is what iv been using 247. Which would you use 24/7 ? See what iv been thinking of doing is 500x8.5 4250mhz that way i dont need the high vcore but the issue is i still need the high vfsb. This the rare batch CO stepping, so im lucky i can even reach 4400mhz on a CO lol

I play Warhammer online and all i do is pvp and the game is really cpu intense, on large pvp battles i have to turn the graphics down so iv been thinking maybe i should overclock to my maximum but im afraid to use those voltages 24/7. Since the game doesnt have a benchmark im not sure if 33fsb and 200mhz will even give me a fps increase

No thats like being scared of a 1.25vcore cpu like the E8400's being put at 1.40v, 1.10v to 1.25v is 0.15v increase im not too worried about 1.20v its the 1.24v-1.26v some people say to use. If you do that to do the vcore you would basicly be putting the cpu at 1.40vcore based off what you said.

Think about it of course most e8400's can run stock at like 1.10vcore but my point being is the vid is usually 1.20 or 1.25v so use that towards your point you made and increase the voltage by the 0.15v like on the VTT and all of a sudden it becomes pretty high.

I have not seen an intel data sheet ever state not to go over 1.14v Vtt. If you look at the intel e8000 series data sheet, it clearly states for 3 series (P35 etc) chipsets a Vtt of 1.10v should be used with a max of 1.155v. However on 4 series (P45/X48) intel states Vtt of 1.20v should be used, with a max of 1.26v. Staying within those voltage ranges is completely safe, I'm not sure why you thought any differently.
