Need advice on voltage adjustments for the GTX 285

I'll be buying a GTX 285 soon and would like to be able to adjust the voltages on it when I get it. I know that the EVGA tool will soon update to include the GTX 285, but could Riva Tuner be used to adjust voltages as well? In other worlds, I need to know if I have to buy an EVGA card or if I get a better deal could I get a BFG or XFX and still be able to adjust voltages through another utility?

GTX285 does not support software voltage manipulation. Its voltage controller does not have an I2C or serial interface allowing programs to control it. The only way to adjust the voltage is by doing a hard mod using a resistor/variable resistor or bridging VID connections. Only video cards with volterra VT11XX voltage controllers can use the rivatuner/EVGA tool to adjust voltage.

Read this entire thread, there's a clear pic of the simple and reversible vmod at post #80. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...=215224&page=4

So all this talk of the EVGA Utility to include the GTX 285 in the near future was just BS?

Moreover, since we are on the subject, could you guys help me out with one more thing? Here in Canada we don't get the same type of deals on cards as you guys. Would I be better suited to get a "BFG GTX 280 OC 615MHZ 1024MB 2.214 with Far Cry 2" for $338 and volt mod it with software vs. the cheapest GTX 285 which sells for $408? What type of performace difference are we talking here with both cards OCed to their max. potential? Is the difference worth the extra $70 plus tax?

Either card will run your games just fine. All I can say is, I really like my 285.
