    Temp Monitoring on Willamette

I've been tinkering with computers for quite a while and my neighbors were throwing away an old P4 Willamette, and seeing as I've always wanted to learn to OC but always been afraid of frying a computer of value, i grabbed it. But the problem I'm having in starting is I want a core temp monitor so that I atleast have some warning before it melts. Any Suggestions?

    FYI:
SpeedFan runs but it wont register any temps, fan speeds or voltages.
    CoreTemp32 doesn't support Willamette

If it helps any, I installed a fresh copy of XP so that only my soon to be newly installed OCing programs are all that is on it.

    Thanks for the help!

    Ok, thanks for the results.

as for MBM5, it does not support the dimension 8200 motherboard, which happens to be the one in this computer.
and when I google PC Wizard 2009 it gives me a warning saying that it's badware and strongly discourages you from visiting the page. As I've never seen that happen before, I'm going to listen to it for the time being. Any help?

If MBM5 doesn't work, you're basically screwed. I wouldn't worry too much about a Williamette getting hot though. Basically any Williamette will have reached it's max. overclock before putting out too much heat. They were duds...

Well ... I have no trouble getting everything back to PIII units to give up their temps under linux using lm-sensors and the hardware sensors applet in my task bar.
    Just saying.

Neat idea, personally I'll cheer if you manage to kill that sucker
Must be one of the worst CPUs ever made, Netburst sucks and the Wilamettes were the worst of them

Yup, my Tualatin Celeron beat every single one of them Willamettes in benchmarks and many of the Northys when at 1600MHz. Think Celeron 420...

Ok, well thanks for all the help... But i think i'm just going to have to learn blind and hope it doesn't burn b/c even PC Wizard 2009 won't read the temperature. It works just fine for everything except fan speed, temp, and Voltage so idk what's up.

But again, thanks for the help!

Ok D_A, so if i decide to go to linux, would you recommend Ubuntu? or which one? and how easy is it to learn to overclock in linux? I don't know why it wouldn't, but would the overclock hold if i decided to switch back to windows?

-Sry if that sounds a little attacking, it's not meant that way i just have alot of questions.

Your operating system is irrelevant to overclocking. Sure there are Windows utilities that work on some NEWER hardware, but they're messing with your hardware, that's where the clock speed is set. Seriously, just change your BIOS settings and don't fek about. If it won't boot your OS of choice, it's not stable. Back it off or find out why and sort it. Fannying about booting at a lower clock then using something like Clockgen to ramp up your FSB and claiming it's a stable clock ... seriously not stable not honest

and yeah, Ubuntu is fine for folk just getting into linux. It's pretty easy, it's VERY secure and it's utterly fixable if you do hose it. Plus it can set itself up to dual boot with windows without any fuss.

I have an Intel i850 board with a Willamette here and I always used an Intel application to monitor the temps and voltages, I think I remember it was the only one that worked.
It's called Intel Active Monitor, you should find it on their website but I don't think it supports non-Intel boards.
