Could you tell us about the initialization time of the RAID cards ?

I know the ICH10R only takes 2-3 seconds before booting starts, but how long does this take with the 'real' RAID cards ?

I can tell you for the Highpoint 3510/20 and Adaptec 5405/5805 because I own these.. Highpoint is really smooth and fast, 6-7 seconds in total I'd estimate. Adaptec is very slow, around 40s for Kernel Boot + another 7-8 seconds for Array init.
Areca is pretty fast too if I recall that boot video I saw correctly, 5-10s? Something like that.

adaptecs boot times arent so bad vs areca 1230 + 1gb cache.. would take more than minute to initialize

Hmm, that's a bit of a pity... I thought the Adaptec 5405 would be the ideal card to buy: SAS support (= 15k.6 support), fast (1.2 ghz Dualcore), relatively cheap and good software.
But boot time is also quite important to me, the ARC1231 and RR3520 are the better options in that perspective, with about the same performance.

Anyone knows how long the ARC1231 would take to boot in RAID0?

i only use raid0.. i dont think it takes any longer/shorter @ other raid

1231 is pretty fast for its size/complexity

2x arc1210 + arc1231 all three at the same time boot faster than 1x 5805

just 1230.. i dont have it anymore but even @ original 256mb cache it probably took as long as 5805 or longer.. 1gb cache @ 1-1.5 minute.. though once booted things got fast lol

that 0MB/s takes several minutes until the controller returns to normal

9.8MB/s max during those several minutes

Does that boot timer start before or after the raid controller starts to initialize?

after bios and array, boot times are fast.
much faster than with my velociraptor and that was without array.

I got a decent boost from the December 8 firmware on my adaptec as well. I've written them and they say they still don't support SSD but are working with the manufacturers so I expect their numbers to eventually go way up.

Interesting I wonder if turning off READ cache would help. Don't want to touch write cache.

I turned off my read cache for exactly that reason . Reads are plenty fast on ALL SSDs.

I'll probably be selling my 5405 when new SSD raid cards get released (the 1405 is non raid). Performance does indeed suffer quite a bit by using the controller versus onboard (of course without taking cache into account, which makes the controller useful even with a performance drop).
