Personally I would have gone with something less professional with higher image quality and a better LCD as well as better ISO performance.
4MP is a non-issue for me because I never heavily crop, and I find ISO performance to be just fine as long as I expose right (Bring up an underexposure in post processing however, and helloooooo shadow noise).

I will admit the flash sync is nice, but 1/16000 shutter isnt really needed. I've never even used 1/8000 on my D300. I wouldnt say it teaches you to get composition right the first time. Its a news photographers camera. They are like chain guns. I medium format film camera teaches you to get it right the first time. No screw ups allowed there.

I think the extremely high shutter speed is useful, especially in bright sunlight if you still want the wide aperture.

For 1/16000 to expose properly at F2.8 or lower you would all but have to point it directly at the sun. In this case, you are just an idiot for pointing your lens at the sun and deserve for your AF sensor/mirror box to get melted. Generally you only want a fast aperture outdoors for doing portraits of people or animals. In these cases you don't ever have that much light on your subject. If you did the subject would be blind. For most outdoor shots where you have the sun in the frame you tighten down the aperture to sharpen up the lens, get better DOF and so that the sun gets that cool shinning star effect.

In any case, clearly Canon felt that 1/16000 was a useless spec as it has not been seen on any of their pro cameras since; and you don't hear anyone complaining about it.

Maybe not directly at the sun, but midday at the beach?

Nope. I have shots like that and they don't require even 1/4000.
