    ques about multi gpu

    I just ordered a gx2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814143128

    right now I have 3 Q6600's in vista64.
    ds3l with a 8800gt
    ds3l with a 8800gt
    ip35pro with a 9800gt

my plan is to put the 2 identical 8800gt's in the abit ip35pro mobo. (corsair hx520)
but one of the pcie slots is 4x when used with 2 cards.
from what I've read on fah forums, it should be fine for a 8800gt.

then I'll stick the 9800gt in a ds3l (only one pcie slot).
and the gx2 in the other ds3l (antec 500 earthwatts).

do you see any probs with that setup? I know the power may be close, but hopefully it will work.. the 2 psu's that will be close are the hx520 and the antec EW 500.

    and

I haven't done multi gpu before, though I do see a decent guide here
    http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=568770

and fah guide has a small one... but if any of you have any links you'd like to post I'd love to have them.

I plan to use the dual connections on my monitor to get the cards folding.

If you run into trouble with this one I'd expect it to be the psu.

Knowing the rating alone (eg. 500w) is not enough. Take for example 2 different psu's from pc p&c. The 1k SR output is 66amps on the 12v rail. The 750watt quattro has a max of 60amps on the 12v rail. For folding Multi-gpu this is key. whilst I'm on the subject that 750 I'm talking about is quite efficient in 45-75% loaded usage. You'll have to check the specs of yours.

When I first started I used these guides:

    http://www.forums.pureoverclock.com/...ead.php?t=3929

    http://forum.xcpus.com/xtreme-foldin...e-nv-gpus.html

and one from Hardforum where the pics are now dead. It's old stuff but the principals still work

I'll let yall know how it goes.. worst case scenario is I put it in my abit rig with the hx520. but I have a gut feeling the antec 500 earthwatss will do ok, it's a 80 plus psu and made from pretty good stock. I plugged the new setups and mild 3.3ghz cpu oc/vcores into http://www.extreme.outervision.com/p...ulatorlite.jsp and they came out mid to high 400's wattage on psu rec.. though I pprobably wont be pulling any 1.5v 3.6ghz oc's any more with a 500w class psu..

I think we'd be surprised if we plugged a killawatt in to see what our rigs are actually pulling.. we tend to overestimate psu usage these days,.

Jebo, one of my buds from OCW killawatt metered his Q6600/2xgtx260 rig while it was folding just for grins and it was pulling 484w.. I would have never believed that without seeing it in screenshots and a pic of the meter.

I've Been trying to remember ....... When I first came here I ran my q6600 stock with 3*g92 overclocked gpu only for just under 500watts I think, but no smp, on x38 and 4gig (readings from a Kill-a-Watt clone)

    I'm running 3 9600gso's w/ a 750watt PC P&C and its solid, but I don't know what its pulling at full load.

I think you'll be ok. Let us know if the psu can handle the 9800gx2.

That reminds me. I have an "old" enermax galaxy 1000 watt sitting around collecting dust. I might have to sell it. Hmm....

OK, she's up and folding.. I just used the dual monitor connection to extend the desktop.
the only problem I had, and it drove me nuts for an hour is:
I tried using that -forcegpu nvidia_g80 flag on the second gpu and for some stupid reason it forced a ati core. and of course it eue'd over and over and over. I thought something was wrong with my setup extending the display, so I went through probably 4-6 reboots canceling the multi display, then re-adding it... then I noticed it kept trying to fold a ati wu, so I deleted the ati core it spit at me with that dumbass forcegpu flag, and it dl'ed a nvidia core and all was good. so it was never my hardware to begin with, dam fah buggy crap. why would a -forcegpu nvidia_g80 give me a ati core, that's retarded. the other client was fine, just that one client with that flag was messed up. otherwise it went smooth.. I used that link above to do the client configs http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=568770

here's the machine with the new gx2. it's at 1825 shader now, eventhough the tool says it's stock. gpuz shows the correct 1825 for both cores. I haven't tried the max yet. it's a hot sucker though.

and my farm total after it was all said and done, and the 2 8800 gt's were moved into their new home in my main rig (abit IP35pro).

When I see those numbers I can't understand why some people keep bashing nV's multi-GPU cards or multi-GPU cards in general. Nicely done Mike, 10K PPD add is really something in the long run!

and the new baby finally starts showing stats results... I had an issue on my dual 8800gt setup, if I dont keep the second card connected to the vga outlet on my monitor it stops folding. only thing I can think of is I have my monitor set for power off at 20min. and it has never been a prob with a single card, or one of the cards now.. but that second card goes down if I don't keep it plugged in. guess I need to make a fake plug or something, or just leave it connected, which is probably what I'll do. the gx2 doesn't have that issue, but I don't keep any monitors plugged into it, so it's set at never power off monitor. or I guess I could get used to just tapping the power button on the monitor on my main rig with the 2 8800gt's and just leave it at monitor always on.

anyway, here's the fist day of good ppd from the new setup.

Not that it's my For Sale thread or anything, but if you guys head down into the For Sale forum here, go into the GPU sub forum, a guy is selling 9800GX2s for $200 each, shipped. If I had the cash, I would grab one.

I changed the power setting to "monitor always on" as a test last night and it fixed my issue with the dual cards (second card that's not plugged into a monitor stps folding when monitor powers off in Vista)

    Question for ya Mike.
I put the Gx2 in my wife's new comp. I want to fold on the side that isn't used for the primary display. How do I tell which side is which and tell the folding client to use the secondary side?

on my gx2, the bottom connector is the primary. the first time I booted with no nvidia driver I had it plugged into the top and got no picture. freaked me out. so I powered off and connected to the bottom and it booted fine with picture. after the nvidia driver was installed and I extended the desktop I could boot to either.

but now that everything is running. that bottom still seems to be the primary, so when the gpu client runs with flags -gpu o and -gpu 1, the -gpu 0 flagged client is the bottom connector main display. I guess it all depends on which connector you monitor is plugged into. I think -gpu o is the bottom, and -gpu 1 is the top.

my 8800gt dual setup is the same way, except primary pcie slot is -gpu 0 and the secondary pcie slot is gpu 1. and that machine I do kill -gpu 0 all the time to watch media center because it runs smoother, but still folds on -gpu 1.

long explanation, but that's what I've played with and learned from trial and error.
