Voted for 4870 cause I have one, 1GB version. Also cause I watch dvds on my computer and it looks better to me compared to Nvidia (had a 9600GT before).

The poll reflects who is reading the thread, not which card is best. Most people appear to have voted for the card that they have, which is the epitmoe of bias, although it's completely understandable and not a crime.

What program are you guys using to o/c your 4870? I read that Atitool is no longer in development to support the HD48xx series.

Also, was the bios flashing to Asus's bios only for the 1gb version?

bios flashing works for 512mb in sig also for 1 gig and 4870x2,just make sure the file is for your particular card etc 512mb, 1g, 4870x2 and so on. I use CCC, works fine.

What exactly does this do and what are the benefits of doing so? Can you please post a link or a quick summary?

Also, what is the best program for overclocking the 4870 now? Rivatuner? Is there one that has a built-in gpu stress test like AtiTool had?

The cheapest GTX 260 (216) is around 225$ and GTX280 is for 294$. So the question arises, Is GTX280 is worth extra 69$ or GTX 260 is still the best bet?

Considering the 260 core 216 can be overclocked to pretty much match the 280, I'd get the cheaper one.

I just picked up a GTX 260 for incredibly cheap (190 US Dollars, and it was bought using gift cards I had), I have a 4870 still as well so I figured I'd chime in. Without screwing with fan settings and so on my GTX 260 Max Core runs much cooler than my 4870 did. That card would idle at 70C unless I throttled the fan way up. Performance wise they seem pretty similar on my box, 3dmark 06 and Vantage turned in similar numbers with a few hundred point increase going to the GTX 260. Its also much quieter with the fan at 40% than my 4870 was.

That being said I really like my 4870 as well, so its more of a preference thing imo.

They're pretty even in terms of stock performance, but the 260 will do better overclocked. The big difference for me is that nVidia cards can decode L5.1 1080p streams so I would say go with a 260, but that's just because I watch a lot of HD movies

Quick sum up, You flash the card and now default clocks are higher. Also higher OC options in ATi's CCC are available. Mine does 860/1100 for benching with AIR no artifacts

your choice video's tend to look nicer on ATI's cards, but in general the 260 edges ahead in most games and isnt going to be THAT bad compared to ati watching vid's so personally if i had the choice now i'd go with the 260! (i have a 4870 to)

Well...I would say if you might what multiple GPUs and you are working with a X38/48 or P45, the ATI would be the only way to go. You can Crossfire it with another 4870, 4850, or 4830.

If you have a 780i/790i, then Nvidia.

If you are planning a single card only, or have an X58 with SLI support (not all do), then the 260 for the reasons mentioned: it overclocks better. You can take a 260 to 20-30% GPU and 10-15% shader clock OC. The 4870 seems limited to around 10%. Since they are close to a dead heat otherwise, that give the 260 a slight edge.

In the past, the ATI had more stable software. Now, they seem to have similar stability.

I have a P45 and a 780i. I went with the 260s...but it was a close call. May still get a 4870x2 if the price drops enough...around $400 after rebate now.
