Lightbulb GeForce GTX 285 to Officially Launch on January 15th

a week after CES and GTX 295

    by AuDioFreaK39

The guys over at OCWorkbench claim to have received official confirmation from NVIDIA regarding the release of the GeForce GTX 285. The card will launch on January 15th, just one week after the debut of dual-PCB GeForce GTX 295 and the first day of CES 2009.

As reported earlier, several Taiwanese retailers have already begun listing ASUS and XFX GeForce GTX 285 cards, with pricing roughly similar to the GTX 280 regardless of region or country.

While the new 55nm card is expected to have an average 10% performance gain over its 65nm GTX 280 predecessor, it is important to note that Nvidia's 40nm GT212s are just around the corner and may even be introduced at lower price points due to effective reductions in manufacturing costs.

I'm doubting it, considering the 55nm GTX 260 212SPs don't overclock quite as well as anticipated..

Hah. Nvidia price a card cheaper just because it's cheaper to manufacturer but offers better performance? I just have to point to the 9800GTX+

(article to be up on Fudzilla soon)
I find this whole GT212 business to be BS... I mean come on! Why would nvidia release the GTX295, a new flagship, only to release another "flagship" (only single GPU to boot) between the 295 and GT300. It just doesn't make any sense. I would think that as far as flagship is concerned, the 285 and 295 will be it until the GT300...

Also, there used to be rumors flying around that the GT300 was going to be this 384sp card that we are now labeling as the GT212... there is just too much BS flying around here to know what to believe.

yeah but they really screwed people with the gimped cooler.

Things might be different under better....cooler conditions. According to one preview the temps should be pretty good too (39 idle, 52 load).

This would be a nice card if it was $350.

As of its overclocking ability now, it does require a lot of faith in single GPU methodology (or a LOT of hatred in dual GPU ones).

/me goes back to the corner waiting for 1GB RV740s to come at $120

Remember the 9800GX2? Nvidia's dual-PCB flagship card for....3 months? Well, it was released on March 18 ,2008 and succeeded by single GPU GeForce GTX 280 on June 17th.

I'm not saying the GTX 295 will be entirely outdated come Q2 (as the 9800GX2 still does better than the GTX 280 at higher resolutions), but according to Nvidia's product lineup, I doubt it will last very long. Besides, Nvidia has to follow TSMC's fabrication production timeline, and 40nm is inching up very soon.

+80MHz doesn't sound bad to me. In fact that sounds about right for the 10% improvement over the 280.

    Typical 280 OC = 720MHz core, x110% = almost 800MHz, or +80MHz

So I guess the cards won't be available for sale on January 8th?

My EVGA upgrade window closes on the 12th of this month!!

If the GTX 285 won't be available on the 8th, I may end up getting the GTX 295 instead.

What do you mean by this?

Do you mean the GTX 285 is a poor overclocker?

I'll be anxiously awaiting results. I have 3 GTX 280's that are eligible for step-up for another 50 days or so. I'm curious to see if 2x295 > 3x285.
