In an astonishing coincidence, that seems to be an SG-850 in my sig powering my main rig. I wonder how that could have happened

If it was new then maybe it took a hard knock in transit. I had an Antec Truepower 550 blow up on me after a house move ...... replacement Seasonic S12 600 is still going strong.

I didn't know it was possible for them to explode like that. Fry, yes, but explode? Lucky you weren't hurt.

Don't write off Seasonic for one psu. Thats probably one in a million thing.

Trusting Newegg reviews for reliability info is like trusting Enron for stock tips though. Anyone with a keyboard can write those things.

Agreed, but 3 outta 3 says something. And I agree that Seasonic makes good PSUs, I've had one running in the PC I built for my son for a couple years now. But I think their first DC-to-DC (M12D) attempt has, at best, been a shakey start.

Not really... it just says that three people had their units die and decided to go make their opinions known. There could be 300 or 1000 positive experiences to those three negatives you didn't hear about

When everything's working right, most people usually don't think twice about it. Something goes wrong, suddenly they're all over the message boards telling others about it. In general, Seasonic is well above average in reliability. The RMA replacement is very, very unlikely to have a problem.

Ah, the M12D. That there is an interesting case. Got a review on it scheduled for the 26th at jonnyGURU.com. Lots of interesting stuff to talk about on that one.

Where's jonnyguru's (as in the site) review of Seasonic M12D?
    Was their sample DOA, perhaps?
You were not supposed to see this.

well i have a corsair HX1000 and i already have a thread about this - im getting a burning smell running the components in my sig. shouldnt be anywhere close to taxing my psu - i have submitted an RMA a week ago and have yet to hear back from them.

i might not buy another corsair either, depending on the outcome of this one. the no response is not helping any. in the meantime im without a pc unless i just bite the bullet and get another psu - the antec 850 that everyone is talking about looks nice but they have a bad rep and i dont know if i want to take the chance

You have noticed what time of year it is, haven't you? A lot of companies are running on reduced hours this week, and/or are busier around the holidays.

As for the Antec, if I had any doubts about it, it wouldn't be in my main rig right now. It's the best unit I've ever reviewed. When/if I find something better, that one will go into my main rig. I must admit though - those big Ikoniks came real close.

its tempting to get the antec, i remember you from anandtech if i remember correctly.

whats the unit called again? do you have a link to the review?
do you think it'll handle a CF setup?

the major name brands i've had so far are silverstone 750, corsair hx1000, pc power and cooling silencer 750 - the only one not to give me trouble so far is the pc power and cooling. the silverstone is long gone (popped from a previous CF setup) and the corsair is flaking out with burning wire smell with the current setup. i swear i have bad luck with psu's and i DONT EVEN OVERCLOCK.
i might check out this antec thats getting these praises

    Here you go: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...Story&reid=101

Yes, it will do Crossfire. With 4870x2 cards if you want it to.

Actually, I don't post on Anandtech. This forum, OCForums, and Extreme Overclocking are the only ones I visit on a regular basis. Other than jonnyGURU forums of course

hmm thought it was anandtech but it was literally a year or 2 ago - maybe it was [H]ardOCP forums? maybe its that one im thinking about. oh well, doesnt matter.

thanks for the link, i'll check it out. so it'll do 4870x2 CF? impressive, does it push the psu to the upper limits though?

It comes close, but this is one PSU that shouldn't complain about that much load. It's built to go the distance.

I forgot Hardforums - I post there too once in a while.

I PMed Red Beard on [H] to get an advanced RMA for my 620HX, when I was diagnosing the squeal. If you have an acct there, I'd PM him to get this expedited. Otherwise, I suppose you could go the long way too...

Needless to say I'll not be ordering another SeaSonic
I'd done some research and the PSU was getting some good reviews; maybe I just got a bad one. Regardless, I ordered an Antec Signature 850W to replace it.
Anyway, newegg was very good about it; they are going to refund shipping costs here and back and no restocking fee! Gotta luv that newegg customer service.
Seasonic make awesome proven PSU's.... **** happens, bad luck

But if I were you I would file an law suit, for the health risk you went through. You will probably win good cash (plus everything Uve spent with lawyers etc) if it really exploded like that

The mere possibility of you being near it when it blew, damaging/killing yourself, the mere possibility of it burning your house down and the "immaterial" issues like emotional stress, scared, not trusting PCSU's anymore etc... Also the days you may have gone without an working PC, damaging your studies/work or messing with your daily routine.

Im an lawyer.... so i can say that all of these are possibilities for u to earn an nice sum of money
