Scared of what the nb volts are and nb and mosfet temps assuming their not water cooled of course.

Heard of some horror stories of them blowing out at high volts etc. Wish they had a nice msi style tons 0' heatpipe cooling solution for nb/mosfet/southbridge like on the msi p45. Even overclocked that performed well at keeping temps good.

Hmm, clearly that can't be retail then if it was made in June '08 can it? But aren't ES samples blank with no writing? Seems a bit strange, but what do I know!

The Phenom in the picture has less pins than the Athlon (I count 2) so for me it looks right too (AM3 has 938 pins while AM2(+) has 940).

yah i see 938 pins, but why doesn't it say "Phenom II" on the IHS?

Maybe this chip was made before they came up with the name? Just a lame guess...

yea thats what i am guessing. it is most likely an old chip probably an earlier revision unlike the C3 revision which the 945 will launch as. it seems kinda legit but still this is kinda odd that this chip would come out of no where and they are expected for a long time.

Alot of AMD's newer ES's seem to use some weird kind of production code. By looking at the PN I can see it's a 1-way desktop CPU, which sounds very reasonable since it has pins. It's also a 3GHZ piece, which is promising - and what we'd expect. The only thing that looks a bit unusual to me is the last 3 numbers, but that's a different story...

To sum it up: that CPU IS an AM3 Phenom II!

    Yep,it appears so

    EDIT:

Oh man,i've just seen this :
    http://www.ocxtreme.org/forumenus/sh...?t=4302&page=2

coolice posted his 5.5Ghz score, canard validation link :
    http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=466730

This is just 9% shy of those 6Ghz scores we saw at the demo.Considering this is one of the first OCing attempts it's very impressive!

    I am a little disappointed.
Check the CPU score (and overall) in 3DM06.

I just checked my stored benches at the ORB, and did a quick run with my Q9450@3.6 (Abit iX38 QGT) paired with HD3850x2.
    Link here

    I had hoped a Phenom II @ 4Ghz + HD4870 easily should beat that.

    ^^ What Macadamia said.

BTW check justapost's results at the same clocks/settings and in the same apps here:
    http://www.ocxtreme.org/forumenus/sh...&postcount=131 (thanks justapost )

Some very noticeable improvements per clock, north of 12%,except in wprime(dunno what's up with that).Phenom II works on that board although it's not properly supported yet.Note the 1.8Ghz L3 clocks.
Also notice the huge jump in Aquamark CPU score when going from Phenom I to Phenom II (both at exactly the same settings/clocks-3Ghz/1.8Ghz same memory timings):
    Phenom I : 11093
    Phenom II: 15745.
That's 41% better score per clock .Seems like a very cache sensitive CPU test.

I would rather focus on Phenom I vs Phenom II results, until the official launch and reviews are out . Then we can compare it to Q series and i7 since all will be polished and ready .

    @Ghostbuster

I just checked some Q9xxx 3dmark06 CPU scores at the ORB.It looks like Phenom II and Q9x50 are pretty much even at the same clocks in this test
    PhII 4Ghz : 5846
Q9550 @4Ghz : 5766 (Phenom wins by a small margin-80pts which is within margin of error-so they are the same per clock)
    Q9650 @ 4.05Ghz : 6033 (Q9650 per clock wins by 1.1%,within margin of error).

I say again all these Phenom II previews are just that-previews.We should wait for final reviews with proper bios versions and final platform to make up our mind where it sits exactly vs Q9xxx series.By the looks of the latest info it's quite competitive ,both per clock and in OCing abilities.
