i am not certain if I am able to give my invite to anyone, but if I am, does anyone who can get to the event in boston, still need an invite?

I hope PH II is good, I just started selling my intel rig to prepare for a new AMD system.

Currently found some old stuff lying around and I'm surfing on an old Socket 754 athlon 3200 :P

I just did the same. My Q6600 system wasn't that bad. I admit I went blue to get my taste of Quad Core. I am planning to Deneb all my systems. Should have never went Intel in the first place. Sold the mobo, CPU, and RAM for 300USD so all is not that bad. ATM Newegg has a deal on their G Skill RAM for 49 buck 2X2GB of DDR II 1066. They should work well with the planned PII 940!

Allright guys just got back. So much info to post.

First off I was limited to OCing actual rigs on display via amd overdrive and 1.45v not that the cpu's couldnt take it.

First system i personally played with was on a stock cooler.
With 1.45v i was able to achieve 3.7, i stuck with mutiplier ocing to eliminate all other variables. Testing method due to limited options was running quake wars in spectating mode so this was 3d stable.

Next system was on a mach 2.
With 1.45v using the same methods above I was able to achieve 4.8 via multiplier while running quakewars in spectating mode.

They also had a comparison demonstration with an C17 965 xtreme, after some persuasion I was allowed to view bios settings and options. I did this to eliminate any skepticism. It was indeed not crippled and running in triple channel. It was using an intel mainstream board.

Macci pulled IIRC 5.6 or 5.7 1.82v crysis 3d stable on kingpin F1 pot and 6.1 (1.9v?) cpuz screen on dragon evo pot.

Enjoy won a 4850 1 gig and his buddy that he brought won a 4870x2.

I won a cpu however unlike everyone else my cpu may arrive a few months later

Everyone was great, I asked alot of questions and they answered all of them openly even questions they probably shouldn't have answered.

In the clock for clock performance category I was informed that Phenom II wil do very very well against intel counterparts.

Macci was great, answered alot of questions and we reminised on some old times namely 939 and manta.
All the boards used for extreme cold at this event were gigabyte 790GX versions. I can confirm that there were no volt mods present on any of the boards.

Matt was a great help as well as simon and they put on a great show kudos to you guys and its great to see AMD BACK IN BLACK

You also may see enjoy and I in a streamcast on video in the flesh

Here's a picture from outside the event as obviously I was not allowed to bring a camera inside.

No release date other than those receiving cpus will see them in january so it's safe to say january.

As far as older am2 compatibilty I would think that is up to the motherboard manufacturer.

I might add I sense a change in the wind and this is just the beginning of more good things to come.

BTW don't shoot the messenger but from what i was told am2+ variants will indeed work in AM3 contrary to the rumours floating around the net.

That was extremely valuable information chew*.Same goes for event report .
Just awesome.Congrats to you and all of XS members who won hardware at the event.
So after all am2+ Phenom IIs might end up working in AM3 boards. This indeed is logical since the chips should be,in theory ,the same.

    Thanks again,great news all around

congrats on winning the cpu. it must be a special cherry pick cpu for you to get it months later . nice recap of the event. i went to the one in chicago a few days ago. was it crowded at this event? the one in chicago was small. so am3 will work in am2+ board huh, very interesting. the grid game in a lan with the logitech wheel/chair is awesome. i can't wait to get phenom II.

Was a small event, movieman (dave) who I was supposed to be the guest of didn't show up, I'm starting to get worried. I'm hoping that his power is out and roads are icy so decided it wasn't a wise trip to take. Hope he's ok.

Nope, he said that [they told him] am2+ Phenom IIs will work in am3 boards. We have known for a while that am3 CPUs will work in am2+ boards. The vice versa was questionable since general opinion was am2+ Phenom IIs have only ddr2 controller enabled as opposed to ddr2/ddr3 controller in am3 chips.
Not that complicated, but it looks that way. If what chew* heard was correct, than any Phenom II,even the first ones in January labeled as am2+ can work with both ddr2 and ddr3 ram.

I'm kind of disappointed that there weren't any tests on regular watercooling there. There seem to be many tests on Phase and LN2, but very few people run those types of setups. There are many more people with watercooling. Anyone have any ideas where PhII will go on water? I'm guessing somewhere between 4GHz (air) and 5 GHz(phase).

sorry to hear that your buddy didn't make it. the weather was nasty here in chicago on that day too. amd rewarded the people who showed up. they're awesome. this is how you treat your loyal fans. intel is too stingy and their products are overprices .

Based on the scaling i saw and an educated guess based on previous hardware that scales similarly that i have used water would put an average chip somewhere between 3.8 and 4.2. These chips run very cool though, with good aircooling you will probably be able to acchive close to an average water cooled loop.

i was hoping for 4Ghz on air, but the on air oc record in chicago was 3.8Ghz. the heatsink they use was huge. do you know the name of that heatsink? i never use watercooling and probably will never use it, so i'm aiming for 3.8-40Gzh on good air cooling. i think it'll be doable.
