You can just use something like Shadow User for example to revert all unwanted changes (after installing the game with securom for example). Acronis True Image would also do the work just fine (these are just the two I use from time to time for a while now).
With a decent firewall, you will be able to track & block any internet connections you want. I find KIS 2009 for example great for all type of users, since it allows advanced tweaking in the same time providing ease of use for unexperienced users (used Outpost + KAV combo before, now just completely switched to KIS).
TuneUp Utilities for example, would decently clean the registry + much more...
So, what I mean is there is planty of useful great software out there that allows you to keep your pc fast, clean and secure always, no matter what you do (install etc.).
No need to worry about securom etc.
Oh yeah, and a nice selection of essential software would ~cost you like one-two new game titles on release.

I know where all securom registries are hidden, i can safely remove it. Also the game will recreate the securom files even if you delete it after the install, i tested this on crysis warhead.
You need this tool, RegDelNull

What's wrong with securom? Never had a problem with it. Also with GTA4 there are no install limits so it's all perfect.
I had GTA4 preordered from a UK online store, but I cancelled it and I'll get it from Steam instead even if I have to pay like $15 more. I just hate having to put the disk in the drive everytime I play..
the state is universally evil, there is no good country only good people
I think it's just people trying to legitimatize piracy.
In the past few months I read countless threads dealing with SecuRom (Spore, FarCry 2, Fallout 3...) and I don't think I have read one good reason against SecuRom.
As funny as it sounds, the whole thing reminds me of Salem witch trials. Burn the developers! Burn them to hell! Nooo, they want to secure their product and make money! Oh no!
I'm totally sick of this.

Then you're suggesting what? No prevention whatsoever? That's like saying "here's a game on a CD, just copy & paste files and it's yours". Oh yeah, that will certainly help a developer make some money!
The point of DRM ***IS NOT*** to eliminate piracy.
DUH!
The point of DRM is to lower down the piracy rate.
/END OF DUH!
That's the goal. As crappy as DRM is, it definitely slows down piracy, and thus it probably ends up making money for the developer. I don't like DRM (who does?), I would be better off without some root-kit like software in my system. But if a game developer can somehow lower down the piracy, why wouldn't it take that route?
I know this might be a stupid example, but listen to this:DRM does not prevent piracy, if it did then piracy wouldn't be an issue.
Condoms do not prevent unwanted pregnancies, if they did, unwanted pregnancies wouldn't be an issue.
Again, you can't totally prevent something from occurring, but lowering the occurrence rate does help.
"Let's never use condoms because they don't eliminate unwanted pregnancies"
Yes, burn those evil condoms!
By doing what? Having a CD in? Or having 1 additional process running in the background?DRM only annoys legit customersIf you're really concerned about having a CD in, you can always download a NO-CD crack....
Defending software piracy only ruins PC gaming. End of story.
And it fails miserably here. If I want to pirate something, I do it, it doesn't matter what kind of protection it has. There is no such thing as "lower down the piracy rate". So again, what's the point of DRM?
They are not defending piracy. They are just against stupid, useless and invasive DRM protection measures.Defending software piracy only ruins PC gaming. End of story.

To imply that the publishers are willing to pay a cut of their new title's earnings to DRM technology companies without any indications or statistics that it has done them any good is naive.
Do you really think they're paying for this tech because they're just assuming it's working?

Not it doesn't. DRM buys publishers time to sell the game. A game that is not protected can be found on a torrent website in no time, while a game that has the newest copy protection takes time to crack. If there are thousandths of people waiting to get a game, they will get their game whether it can be found at GameStop or on their favorite torrent website. If it's not found on a torrent website because it hasn't been cracked yet, at least some of these pirates will buy the game.
With some of the recent titles this hasn't been entirely true because people got the games way before the release, and thus the games popped up early on torrents.
Earlier in the thread Duniek posted a picture of GTA4 PC. Probably the only reason why it is not on torrents yet is because it has SecuRom.
...And so people can keep pre-ordering the game / buying it when it hits the store shelves.
Of course, if you're a pirate that owns no legitimate software, you are not going to buy this either, and just wait until it finally makes an appearance on torrent websites. But I would imagine this would be a minority of pirates. A majority of pirates being people who DO buy games but also pirate them.
Why else would they use it? Spy on people? (well, luckily, DRM hasn't hit this far)Originally Posted by Sr7
Yes, it takes hours or less if the guys that make the crack don't have early access to the game.
I don't know what kind of pirates you've met, but that's absolutely not the case with the ones I know. Their motivation is not paying for it, they don't care to wait some hours to get the game. They are not that desesperate.
It seems you think that SecuROM is some kind of invencible protection... People upload the game without the crack when they have the chance. And then the crack is published. If it's not on torrents yet is because the ones that usually upload them don't have the game like Duniek yet. Give them some time and you'll see how many minutes SecuROM is alive.
Exactly. And I think you think way to good of them. I don't know a single person that thinks "hey, maybe I will pirate GTA4". Either you're going to pay, or you're going to download the torrent. One or the other.
And you can't buy the game and at the same time pirate it. Putting a crack in your legal installation is not pirating.

Wow, talk abouting failing.
I was *agreeing*, saying that all publishers are obviously using DRM because they see some statistics that it's working.
Not to mention you completely mis-quoted me by taking it out of context. I revised my statement to make it blatently clear what I meant.
starforce and securom are made by the same team, the only thing that was removed or hasnt appeared yet is flashing firmware. but its got other things like remote root access and it can have heuristicall scanning for virtual devices and pirated software as well as getting cd/validation keys for your os and other software and phone it home
securom also can jump packets to the top of the net stack so they arnt filtered by software and u would need a smart hardware firewall to block it, and how many of us have a $5k enterprise grade network
(all above is for sucurom post but not including 4.6, 4.6 and below uses pings to blank sectors to check latency)
its people who use that argument that keeps the game companies from using the basic securom or just a key and online check that this malware is accepted to be OK and its just the pirates that dont like it, but the pirates dont care securom is easy to break and so is windows live it just makes legitimate people not be able to play
and a last note, if u have securom rom affter 4.6 its always running monitoring it has the potential to keylog track everything u do why would u want that, even if its not doing that now its still using resources watching, if nothing else lowering performance isnt that not the xtreme systems way we wan the most of our systems not to gimp them, so we shouldent back it until its no longer malicious and omnipresent
Well, DRM that has been cracked before and that is employed in a new title would result in just that, but SecuRom keeps releasing new versions of their copy protection, which I would imagine would take much, much longer to crack, since it is not as simple as picking a copy protection in Alcohol 120%.
I'm quite positive that I have met the most common pirate: myself. When I was younger I would download games or get a pirated copy from someone - simply because I did not have money. From time to time, I would be able to convince my parents to buy a game for me, and hence why I said that the most common pirate buys and owns pirated games. A mixed situation.I don't know what kind of pirates you've met, but that's absolutely not the case with the ones I know. Their motivation is not paying for it, they don't care to wait some hours to get the game. They are not that desesperate.
If there was a way to check "who" downloads pirated games, I'm quite sure most of the population would fall into a 10 to 20 year old group.
No, of course not. It is easily crackable by anyone - provided that the work has been done already by a "professional" cracker. I doubt a six pack Joe knows how to program in assembly code. Heh.It seems you think that SecuROM is some kind of invencible protection...
Now, let's have some hope that the game won't be pirated before the release.People upload the game without the crack when they have the chance. And then the crack is published.
If it's not on torrents yet is because the ones that usually upload them don't have the game like Duniek yet. Give them some time and you'll see how many minutes SecuROM is alive.

Yes, but one or two days are not going to give the developer more money. They have to understand that with DRM they only f*ck the honest buyer. I don't want to crack the protection to be safe against it. With no DRM they won't change the minds of the pirates, but at least they'll please us. Now we have Steam type platforms which are nice to the end user and at the same time are the best option for a developer that doesn't want its game pirated.

people tried they are Russian though and Russia has no cooperation and its not illegal in Russia so u cant do anything about it unless a country sues them there is no legal action that u can take except for the publishers but they dont code in securom so they arnt liable for it (securom is coded into apps by securom, publishers just pick what level they want)
that also brings that securom has access to your computer not the dev or publisher

Ofc GTa4 will look better on PC. I played it on both ps3 and xbox and tbh it looked crap on both.
You can have the debate on what console it looked better as much as you want but in the end the both consoles where to weak to meet the reqs the game needed. Wich made the game annoying on both do the pop ups and stuff.
But the major flaw of GTA4 cant be taken away by a PC version wich is that the game itself is crap.
It isnt nearly as much fun as SA or VC was. With those 2 i actualy followed and enjoyed the storyline where in GTA4 i didnt care 1 bit on the who and what.
Also there was alot less cheap humor then in the previous games (i like cheap humor). It was almost asif gta4 was made by diffrent people. The game kind of takes itself to serious.
Also lots of things that where in the previous games werent in GTA4. i would have gladly taken slightly lesser grafix if i in return could have had more of the old stuff back.
I know there are alot of people that liked GTA4 but i was completely dissapointed

then what would they have for the next gta?? nothing.. its all marketing and milking you for the money... so the next game can be better.... why offer it all on the table the first time around if you don't have to
