finally!. if the regular phenom ii do that.. FX ?!?
This is the key... Among enthusiasts there are a LOT of people waiting in the wings to move up from a Q6600.
i7 is interesting, but doesnt really light my fire from a gamers perspective. A Phenom2 at 4.x Ghz under water will be fun to play with. I can also reuse my DDR2 on the AM2+ part. Which is nice. I will be very interested to see if DDR3 adds any performance to these cpus. I am guessing probably not as fsb saturation has never been a design problem dur to HT links. The unlocked 3ghz launch part on a mature 790 chipset board could be a very attractive combination for a lot of people.

...So buy AMD stock now or wait a little longer? In truth I have been keeping an eye on AMD ever since ATIC started pumping money into em; ATIC(Abu Dhabi) = deeper pockets than Intel. So with 4x00 series GPUs gobbling up market share and now PII looking good has AMD bottomed or will weakening global demand persist and force em even lower? I keep telling myself AMD can't go bankrupt(for several reasons) but I used to think the same thing of the American auto industry...
Not to get my hopes up too much, what oc would it take to beat my Q9550 4.2Ghz oc., wc? 3.8Ghz on Ci7 kicks my b**t. There are two upgrade scenarios for me:
1. Insane headroom on Deneb 920/940, somewhere in the $240-$280 range, or 2. Intel responds with price drops and I pick a Ci7 920/940 in the $240 - $340 range and overclock to 4.2, maybe 4.5 with process maturation/revisions in H2 '09.

^ 5$ says ill clock my deneb just like my q9650
I for one wish AMD would come back so we can have good competition on pricing and a choice between two different brands, good job, i hope they can compete clock for clock performance, then we will be talking business, but if AMD has a 4ghz cpu that is as good as intels 3.2ghz, that wont be a good sign.
Looks like i might be coming home . More importantly and there was another thread on AMD recently and what i think AMD was hinting at and this strikes me as odd that nobody picked up on it is that it appears that AMD has fixxed the cold bug...........They probably could have clocked close to this high all along as long as the chip doesn't coldbug.......

sli on an intel chipset, amd running at 6ghz... is it just me or is the whole playing field starting to open up
come one amd make it half the price of nahalem!
holy TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTtt
As Los Alamos director J. Robert Oppenheimer watched the demonstration, he later said that a line from the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita came to mind:
"I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
Test director Kenneth Bainbridge in turn said to Oppenheimer, "Now we are all sons of b**ches." wiki

I might have to actually dust off all 3 of my phase change units, its been awhile......I skipped 65nm and went with intel, not a fanboy in the truest sense, I always use what works, when its an even playing field i prefer amd/ati however.

I have the same way of thinking and preference like yours. My rig is mainly a gaming rig for heavy computing usage -E8400 @4.2 GHz with X38 MoBo & HD 4870 512 MB, Core i7 is out of my league pricewise, and Yorkfield with 9x multi hasn't come down in price for my upgrading purpose. If that Deneb 940 can be quite affordable -significantly cheaper than the cheapest Core i7, i would seriously consider using them in my next system upgrade.
their numbers are true, that was a way handpicked sample tho... then again, all the high core i7 numbers weve seen are with handpicked cpus as well...
This news came with a big suprise to me. What I'd really like to see is how nonhandpicked samples fare overclock wise and how does 4GHz Phenom II compare to 4GHz Core 2 Duo/Quad and i7 and how far they overclock on a more 24/7 friendly voltage like 1.45v or so.
Great job AMD, this was like a blessing for overclockers knowing there's FINALLY no coldbug! I thought this day would never come.

this is pretty sweet.
Let's just hope these aren't the best chips they can churn out
So everybody else could enjoy ~4ghz clocks too

I bet somewhere between Kentsfield and Yorkfield in per clock performance.
Looking forward to it, if it's true. First AMD chip I am considering since S939 Opteron.

so would deneb justify buying any amd stock? ive been looking for some very good and cheap technology stock, and if amd can last then id like to buy a few hundred stocks
but the problem is nehalem in the server market, we all know that the regular consumer market is nothing to the server market for cpu's. and nehalem would absolutely tear the deneb server version (forgot name ^_^) and amd a new one
Oldguy932 posted this in the AMD section, now that interests me an awful lot as we know performance scales with increases in nb frequency on the Phenom.
Depending on how much this can be clocked and to how much the nb frequency can scale will determine how close in performance the Phenom II will be to i7.
Things look awfully interesting.
Also another thing to point out, is that even if this is a cherry picked sample, historically AMD have shown that they are excellent at tweaking the manufacturing process. With peeps like Macci onboard, with a wealth of knowledge will futher assist this.
Good Work

I was already assuming that, 1.45v is still a decent amount on aircooling for 45nm process. I was thinking along the lines ~1.365v Intel <-> ~1.45v AMD whereabouts I concider safe 24/7 usage. Now if AMD's Phenom II is more resistant I don't know of course but I said I was only assuming anyways. So yea some ~1.45v overclocks would be interesting.
